The real meaning of "progressive" mental health care.
I see that the washington post claims that AZ has "what is considered one of the most progressive mental health laws in the country" because "Any person, including any of the students in Loughner's classes who exchanged worried emails about his strange actions or any of his teachers who sought to have him removed or who wanted him to receive treatment, could have petitioned the court to have him evaluated for mental illness."
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/44/2011/01/jared-loughners-behavior-never.html

With all do respect, bullshit.

"Progressive" mental health care allows people to remain in their home, or in the homes of loved ones, while recovering. Progressive mental health allows for people to receive treatment regardless of ability to pay. Progressive mental health treatment is all about providing recovery based services in a compassionate, non-judgmental environment.

If you want to see what progressive MH care looks like, take a look at the city of Geel (Gheel), Belgium. If you want to see progressive care in America, look at any movement that stresses de-institutionalization. As far as I know, the state of Arizona ain't no leader in "progressive mental health care". All the AZ mental health law does is make it easy to harass people that are culturally or socially different, imho. Where is the "progress" in that?

1. They think that all they have to do is
put "progressive" in front of something and people will believe it. Well, by and large, they do. The 'serious' media companies in the U.S. know that most Americans are too damn lazy to look anything up and do any fact-checking and they take advantage of it all the time. If they want to sell newspapers again, maybe they should print the whole damn thing in cartoon format. Eventually they might not have to print words at all anymore and the people will be in paradise, never having to read again.
