7:15 PM ET Homeland Security Report Warned Of 'Lone Wolf' Attacks

The opening of this report from the Center for Public Integrity sums it up:

Two years before the Tucson massacre, the Department of Homeland Security warned in a report that right wing extremism was on the rise and could prompt "lone wolves" to launch attacks. But the agency backed away from the report amid intense criticism from Republicans, including future House Speaker John Boehner.

The report, which warned that the crippled economy and the election of the first black president were “unique drivers for rightwing radicalization and recruitment,” described the rise of “lone wolves and small terrorist cells embracing violent rightwing extremist ideology the most dangerous domestic terrorism threat in the United States.”

2. And in this case, GOP whining forced them to back down
I won't hold my breath waiting for someone to interview Boehner about this...it might make him cry, after all.

7. On one of this weekend's discussions on F.R...
...one of the posters was discussing some act of terra...don't recall which...and was jubilant over the fact that the suspect turned out to be a "muzzie."

He actually posted the word in the huge "H1" font. The guy was thrilled.

It's amazing, all of the whining about "the left" and "how can you SAY THOSE THINGS about Sarah"...do they ever read their own posts?

10. What is with this constant "lone wolf" analogy? They mate for life and are generally in pairs.

11. A lone wolf is an oddity.
Against the norm. Not working with a mate or others.

To be sure for the most part these shooters have been to crazy to be strictly partisan voters, but it's clear they are tuned into the craziest of crazy political rhetoric and conspiracies out there.

15. And not the only one - don't forget the Ft. Hood shooter
Maj. Nidal Hasan
Acted alone. 13 slain.
There are differences but each acted alone and each had bats flying around upstairs.
In the Ft. Hood case as well, there were warning signs ignored ....snip:
U.S. officials said a Pentagon worker on a terrorism task force had looked into Hasan's background months ago and had concluded he did not merit further investigation. Two officials said the group had been notified of communications between Hasan and a radical imam overseas and the information had been turned over to a Defense Criminal Investigative Service employee assigned to the task force. The two spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation.
