4. It IS very sad. It sounds like there was never any real happiness and joy
in that house. I'm sure that contributed to their son's mental state.

6. So they came home, heard the news firsthand and later started to
barricade the house from 'intruders'? Someone better keep an eye on them, sounds like a huge case of paranoia.

21. Don't know if you've ever dealt with the press - they can be an unstoppable force.
Hounding people at their front door for days on end. I wouldn't blame them, in their shock, shame and grief wanting to barricade the front door.

off themselves or something to that affect. THAT was my point.

7. I do want to know more. I feel for the parents.
Neighbors do have disagreements, just like Obama's loyal followers vs. DUers who care about certain issues; angry words are exchanged. Usual chores such as keeping one's yard manicured & neighborly fellowship slip to the back burner for parents who are grieving about their son's odd behavior.

I do think they knew something was amiss with their son.

8. I know it will not be real popular but like in any other crime
they are the other victims. And a certain level of compassion for them has to be afforded too. They have lost a son... no, not in the same way as a nine year old... but they have.

This is one of the things I learned over years of EMS. Whenever there is a violent crime... you also have the family of the perpetrator. They are also victims...

In our society we like to demonize the parents ... since they did not do things... whatever. In our society mental health is not a high item on anybody's agenda... and in our society the strange and the weird are also marginalized.

So if you pray... I don't... offer a prayer for them too.

11. Here is the article that te tweet has a link to

No statement in the article, it's about how the neighbor says that the dad has a written statement and will probably release it through the sheriff's office. Also explains how the parents initially found out about what happened

12. "They're hurting real bad,"
"They're hurting real bad," Mr. Smith said, outside the house, in a neighborhood north of Tucson amid a flat carpet of strip malls and low subdivisions. "They are devastated."

...

He said he believes Randy hasn't worked since Jared was born. Amy had a steady job and Randy raised Jared, he said.

19. I wonder if people could set something up for them, to let them
know that people understand how they are suffering and care about them as much as everyone else who lost so much this weekend. These few days must have been hell on earth for them. And people thought they were being arrogant and difficult.

They seem to have been neglected and it breaks my heart to think that the father was trying to write a statement by himself and did not know how to get it out. How terribly sad.

23. When I was searching for news
I saw at least one prayer site for the parents. All the messages I read were supportive and kind.

The father was depressed already. I fear for them. Can you imagine living for the rest of your life with this? Having to watch your child's trial and possibly his execution?

And forever blaming yourself that you didn't get him help after the school wrote to you that he needed help promptly?

How many more Americans are falling through the cracks? Depressed, unemployed, uncared for?

32. Thank you. Hopefully it will help them to know that people
do care about them. I cannot imagine living with something like this. How they survive will depend on how they are treated now. They seem to have been a sad family, not really trusting of anyone from what we know so far. Something must have caused that in their own lives.

Other people are where they were, you are right. I'm sure they knew their son had problems, but could never have imagined him doing what he did. Living with the problem they probably got used to it, and maybe defensive when outsiders, like the school eg, tried to tell them there was a problem.

'Depressed, unemployed' and most of all 'uncared for'. Far too many people in this country are living that life and each time something like this happens, it is in the news for a while, and then we move on without ever doing much about it.

Thank you for the information on the site. If you get a link, I would definitely post a message to them  to you also.

15. It is very, very sad. My heart goes out to them.
In many ways the parents of the accused suffer as much, and without the support, of the parents and loved ones of the victims.

What a nightmare for them now for the rest of their lives.

I can't help remembering the Amish school killings right now. The parents of the victims and the community went out of their way to help the parents of the killer, bringing them food, taking them to the graves so that they could show their sadness without recrimination.

At the time, the country was inspired by the incredible spirit of those people and their kindness to people who were suffering so badly.

I would like to think that the same will be done for these poor people. Their lives are altered forever. I hope people will be kind to them.

18. From another article about the parents. Very sad too.

...

Obviously, it’s more complicated than that, as can be evidenced by the Loughner’s reaction to the tragedy. The LA Times caught up with a neighbor who confirmed that they are falling to pieces over what has transpired. The piece described them as ‘huddled in seclusion’ and repeatedly mentions the father crying, while the mother is bed-ridden with angst.

A neighbor named Wayne Smith was apparently summoned to get the family’s mail, and ended up in the house with them shortly afterward. The Times story quotes him a few times.

Here are some notable tid bits:

“We stood right out there and cried for an hour. I’m a softie…A man needs compassion. He’s broken up about his son, but also about all those people who died.”

Yet another neighbor, this time directly next door, was quick to jump on the phone with Fox News to describe Randy Loughner as an ‘angry’ man. He even offered a story about trash that was left in front of their home that led to some sort of dispute (see that video below).

As the nation struggles to come to grips with this tragedy, fingers are being pointed at politicians, political parties, and even the current zeitgeist in general. Let’s truly hope that somehow through such immense loss, we can learn how to prevent such atrocities in the future.
