To Sheriff Dupnik: "Keep your damn mouth shut" Bernard Goldberg, right now, on Fox
It's the repeat of O'Reilly's "show." Goldberg said that the Sheriff should "Keep his damn mouth shut." Or what, I wonder? And then he and O'Reilly proceeded to blame the left for using the "death of a nine-year-old girl" and "hate speech" as a political device. No irony, of course.

Not that we should be remotely surprised by anything said by anyone on Fox, but I am shocked that Goldberg would utter such a disgusting, bullying statement to the Sheriff -- Sheriff Dupnik, who happens to be a friend of Congresswoman Giffords, who is alarmed by the atmosphere of hate and anger in Arizona because he actually lives there and has to deal with it. Goldberg says that the Sheriff shouldn't make any comments about the politics of hate by telling the Sheriff to "Keep his damn mouth shut." That's not threatening or grossly inappropriate at all, is it?

Disgusting.

names nor said what shows.
All i have ever heard him say is that talk radio and the media have a lot of hate coming out of them
and the right just assumes he is talking about them .......... strange how that works
they know they are full of hate and just assume when people talk of hate they are talking about them

10. Goldberg is trying to bully a Sheriff?

Isn't he the voice of reason! (I certainly hope that blood all over Bloody Bill didn't stain Goldberg's suit or anything.)

Seriously, I turned on some hate radio (it's all that's out there tonight) and the new meme is that the Sheriff is an idiot and incompetent.

That's what we're getting as the new SPIN from those Law and Order republicans and teabaggers....calling a sheriff an idiot and telling him to shut up.

THAT will certainly help

THAT proves the right had nothing to do with this violence!

"Keep your damn mouth shut" sounds like something a gangbanger or mob boss would say, Goldberg. Your true colors are showing....

They are no more than thugs!

Fox has all these ads on about how we should all be afraid that our freedom of speech is being taken away ohnoes!

Then they let Goldberg on to tell a law enforcement officer he better "keep his mouth shut?" So much for that freedom of speech Fox is saying we should hold dear!

What blatant hypocrisy!!!

karma catches up with all of them.

I hope any sane American who might have toyed with Fox's and Rush's and Palin's hate rhetoric has finally seen the light and had enough of the violent imagery and talk and veiled threats.

May sanity and reason overcome any who once thought Fox had anything but hate and political upheaval for sale.

37. Shit, I've been hoping for a Joseph Welch moment for 30 years (since
Edited on Tue Jan-11-11 12:20 PM by coalition_unwilling
the days of Reagan and Lee Atwater). I really think it will take a Republican of national stature now to call out the hate\violence and shame its practitioners into silence. So I don't really have much hope. If a Republican like Hagel were going to speak out, he or she has already done so and been threatened as a result of November 2010 results.

Maybe Colin Powell could say something and have it carry some weight, although Powell has pretty much been excommunicated from the Republican Party for endorsing Obama over McCain.

38. Isn't it sad that there is not ONE prominent republican

willing to stand up and say "enough?"

That speaks louder than anything else can: they have no sanity, decency or concern for this nation.

Look at our new Speaker of the House. That Bloody boehner made veiled threats against one of his fellow house members - a guy with three small children! What kind of creep does that?

They have no sense of human decency. Gone are the days of any rational, caring peace-loving Republicans. The right has been taken over by the hate, and it's all they have to show.

The truth is, they are BULLIES, and I agree with you that there is no hope for these sorts of mean-spirited, hate-filled bullies.

52. I actually think some Republicans are afraid to speak up for fear
of having the tea partiers turn on them. I say this only b/c some Republicans, like Chuck Hagel, struck me as fundamentally decent types although wrong-headed on the issues. One of my friends reminded me yesterday that a lot of centrist Republicans took it on the chin from the tea partiers during the run-up to the November 2010 mid-terms.

I posted a thread about this very absence of Republican leadership on the issue a couple days ago:

visceral memory of Cheney snarling those words. Maybe false memory syndrome at play. Ari certainly was a piece of work also.

I do remember there being a general climate of 'shut up and salute' in the immediate aftermath of 9-11 and in the run-up to Iraq (prior to February 15, 2003, that is, when our 'focus group' made its voice heard).

26. I'm taking Goldberg's tantrum as proof
that they ain't got nothing else.

The fact that they are now demonizing the Sheriff says it all.

To me, all they had to do all day today is express their condolences to the victims and plead with their listeners for peace. That would be the appropriate, measured, adult thing to do. I didn't expect this, mind you. I expected them to be full of hate and venom - as if nothing bad had happened because of the hate and vitriole.

I'm quite amused that they have all, instead, gone on the defensive so vehemently! This proves they are scared silly. Without the hate, they have no schtick and no $$$$ but with the hate, they prove they are violent sociopaths contributing to the downward spiral of political discourse.

OH NOES!!!! What are they going to do? How will they SURVIVE without the hate!

They find a new enemy, of course!!!

"I know, let's pick the Sheriff!!!! We'll hate on him a while til this all blows over!!!!"

They are pathetic!!!! Seriously deranged and pathetic.....

21. Studies show that Sheriff Dupnik is spot on in his criticism.
Studies of authoritarian personalities show that they are STRONGLY influenced by authority figures.

Studies by Stanley Milgram and Robert Altemeyer show that people who are considered psychologically "normal" can be persuaded to commit violence on people who are no threat to them just by the urging of those that they consider to be authority figures.

Actually, the excuse that this shooter was "crazy" is less relevant to his actions than the atmosphere of hate and violent rhetoric spewed by "authority" figures. Even a crazy person will not necessarily act out their animosity if their social environment frowns upon such activity.

They found a Bernie book at his place:

No wonder he doesn't want people talking about this issue, he's already inspired at least one killer!

Edit: He even cited Goldberg in his writings: "This was a symbolic killing. Who I wanted to kill was every Democrat in the Senate & House, the 100 people in Bernard Goldberg's book"

56. I read up on the Sheriff - He seems like an actual public servant who cares.
I think with all his years of service he has a right and responsibility to call it as he sees it.

It is HIS right to free speech too. He has an opinion. He didn't say people should rise up and beat down people spewing the rhetoric but that we need to deal with it as part of the equation and find a solution.

How many bar fights started because people got into heated discussions and one thing led to another? If the patrons in the bar are cheering on the violence, the Sheriff has to tell them to pipe down to get the energy to settle down. Seems to me any local Sheriff would see what happened Saturday and all the hate speech that went before as related and part of a larger problem.

How can these people lobotomize themselves the way they do? Selectively paying attention to only those things they think prove their point and ignoring all facts and logic to the contrary.

WHAT the hell is IN the koolaid they are drinking?
