Is ANYBODY in the Media talking about the tax hike for those making under $20K?
Edited on Wed Dec-15-10 06:36 PM by gateley
Edit - I didn't specify Media and many DUers have said "I'm talking about it" or "So and so has been posting about it" -- It's because of you guys that I even know about it. As usual, I get the best info from DU. But just crickets from the Media. The Unemployed, The Middle Class. Period. Nothing much about the 99ers (except Ed, I think) and I haven't heard anybody mention the working poor. I haven't been watching/listening to TV/radio all that closely the past few days, so that's what I was asking, so it would have been helpful if I posted what I was asking in my head! :hi:

that I even know about it. Think I'd better go edit my OP -- thanks! :hi:

"The Worse Off You Are, Your Taxes Increase"
Journalist David Cay Johnston Slams Obama-GOP Tax Deal

http://www.democracynow.org/2010/12/14/the_worse_off_you_are_your

The U.S. Senate is on the verge of approving President Obama’s controversial tax deal with Republicans. Under the deal, Obama agreed to extend the Bush-era tax cut for the wealthiest Americans and reduce the estate tax in return for a 13-month extension of jobless benefits and a handful of tax credits for low- and moderate-income Americans. We speak to Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist David Cay Johnston, author of Free Lunch: How the Wealthiest Americans Enrich Themselves at Government Expense (and Stick You with the Bill).

most need it should be helped. That's the ONLY reason I can 'forgive' those voting for this (those whose concern is for the Unemployed and the Middle Class), but learning about this (from DU, natch) and knowing about the 99ers being left out, totally negates ANY good I see coming from this.

EDIT: Came back to give you a hug  Thanks for talking about this. :pals:

7. Yeah - that's how I should have worded it. Just saw Katrina vanden Heuvel on
w/Ed, and they were talking about the 'tax breaks for working Americans' which, I think, sounds as though EVERYBODY will be helped. I think this needs to be highlighted and screamed about.

Off to fire off some e-mails now. :hi:

11. I've missed him the past several days -- so you're saying he's pointed this out?
I do know he backs the bill (or that's the impression I got last time I saw him). Not necessarily agreeing with it, but as you say, understanding what needed to be done to get it made.

The only reason I cared about putting this deal through was because of the middle-class tax help and those on Unemployment. But it seems like such a waste to me when so many WON'T be helped -- the 99ers and those making under 20K.

Anyway, thanks - I'm glad to know someone is mentioning this. I'll be sure to catch him tonight. :hi:

That means we're all getting more even if we don't have kids and don't qualify for those tax credits. Because shut up that's why.

I don't have to pay income tax because I don't make enough money...

But...

I pay a humongous sales tax -- here in the New Mississippi it's nearly 10%!

They LOVE regressive taxation here in Arizona...

17. The message being sent to us peasants
seems to be getting clearer. We don't matter at all, and yet, we can still cling to hope for change someday.

In the last stages of the closing of the Class War, we can wonder and wait and stare in shock and disbelief as we are written-off the face of the planet. Oh, they wouldn't do that, many good people may think. No, maybe YOU wouldn't do that, but that nefarious cloud of "they" is doing it as we speak with increasing intensity and obviousness.

It seems to me that the tremendous imbalance of power and wealth could be encouraging a very interesting option of self-preservation for the planet's owners. Resources are rapidly dwindling. Productivity measures and robotics can eliminate the need for many groups of workers. Technology may provide options for the survival of the wealthy without so many of us.

Draw your own conclusions as the parade of charades marches triumphantly across what we thought and expected. Time to stop.

30. I'm glad to hear that -- that they've been talking about it. I wish it weren't so
divisive here - we can't even have a difference of opinion without being put 'on the list'. Like the people who wrote off Jon Stewart because they didn't like what he had to say on Rachel. I thought that My Way or the Highway was the Republicans' MO, not ours. :eyes:

19. There have been articles in the MSM about it.
Dylan Ratigan asked Austan Goolsbee about it last week. Goolsbee's reaction could be summed up as "meh". Larry Summers' response was that it was just some single people who would be affected.

33. Maybe this is what all those gushings of praise about Reagan lead to: similar policy...
Reagan takes the cake, though: he simultaneously lowered taxes on the rich while raising them on the poor and taking away services. Would you like some republican vegetable with those fries?

Yet the cries echo that we must stand by our President and his weasely hacks because to do anything else would be to bring ruin to our party. Some party; it's hardly even a get-together at this point.

I AM so concerned about those who will be hurt if it isn't approved. But now that I'm aware of this, WTF? How on earth did ALLOW this to happen to this group of people? And while he was at it, giving away the store, he should have gotten help for the 99ers, too.

It breaks my heart. And pisses me off.

42. Amy Goodman did on Democracy Now!
But LinkTV is a fairly obscure cable station buried among the religious cable stations so I doubt if a lot of people saw the segment on it. Otherwise, I haven't seen, heard or read it anywhere else except here on DU and a few other internet sites. But like you I don't listen to or watch much MSN media unless it's accidental or within another show like KO or Rachel.

43. If you call it a tax hike, you feed into the Republican argument in favor of tax cuts for the rich.
Edited on Thu Dec-16-10 01:50 PM by Shandris
The two follow the exact same philosophy. The credit was due to expire, returning it to a non-existant level -- just like the Bush Tax Cuts.

We never once called that a 'tax hike' for the rich, because no tax was being RAISED.

How then do we take the exact same thing and NOW call it a tax hike and expect to maintain any appearance of consistency? It's less of a credit than last year, but it is NOT a tax hike.

If I've got some misinformation somewhere, please let me know because it seems to me I'm missing something, but I'll be damned if I know what.
