Twelve Carry Guns -- Including Assault Rifle -- Outside Obama Event
From August 17th of 2009

http://tpmlivewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/08/twelve-carry-guns----including-assault-rifle----outside-obama-event.php

<snip>
About 12 people were carrying guns, including at least one semi-automatic assault rifle, outside a building where President Obama was speaking today.

<snip>
These reports come less than a week after two people brought guns to a presidential event in Portsmouth, N.H. At Obama's town hall there, one man was arrested for having a gun hidden in his car after the Secret Service found him at Portsmouth High School hours before Obama arrived carrying a pocketknife. He didn't have a license for a concealed weapon.

Another man in Portsmouth was spotted carrying a gun in a leg holster outside the school. The unconcealed weapon was legal under New Hampshire law and he was not arrested. Later, when asked why he brought the gun, he replied, "That's not even a relevant question. The question is, why don't people bear arms these days?"

And that's not all. A man brought a gun to a town hall with Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) last week, without incident. At an event with Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), someone dropped a gun, but he had a permit and no police report was taken. And two weeks ago, a New Mexico man tweeted that reform opponents should bring guns to town halls and "badly hurt" SEIU reps.

3. Some of this borders on brandishing IMO.
Not carrying concealed, of course. But walking around with a rifle at a campaign event?

7. If we recall...
We could not show up at Bush events with a picture of a gun. That was considered a threat. We were herded blocks away and locked in "free speech zones" like cattle. Remember??

9. Hell, we couldn't even show up at a bush rally
with a tee shirt they didn't like. We were put several blocks away in a pen so bush wouldn't have to look at our shirt.

29. ...and, if we had given money to Democracy for America and such,
we were on the LIST! And couldn't even allow ourselves to think about President Bush, lest it be considered a threat.

11. Yep! And no one from the left was ever allowed to asked AWOL Bush a question
without being thrown out of the event he was at.

There WAS no free speech under AWOL Bush's reign!! He stifled it wherever he went. No way in hell would a liberal have ever brought a gun to an event. Hell, we weren't even allowed to talk!

13. Bringing weapons to political speaking events threatens free speech..
IMO those events should be allowed to prohibit it just as hospitals, schools and government officials do.

33. Kentuck, thank you for the reminder. It was a dangerous time
for Obama and all Dems in Congress. We can say with certainty that those idiots who carried guns to the town halls DO have a particular political ideology.

IMO, it's too soon to say whether or not Loughner has a particular political ideology that led him to do this. But it would be irresponsible not to ask whether violent images, tough-guy gun-toter images, might influence the more disturbed among us to act violently.

34. There is a considerable body of evidence that television and video games
Edited on Tue Jan-11-11 11:56 AM by Pancho Sanza
are significantly responsible for some kinds of violent antisocial behavior. It does seem a bit odd, though, that the most "intimidated" people seem to be the ones who weren't anywhere near the events.

37. Bring a gun to a political rally to hunt for squirrels maybe?
Why bring guns to a political rally? - Chris Mathews asked a Teabagger.

He made the case that the US has had more political shootings than anywhere else, why bring a gun? (To hunt for squirrels cuz the kids are hungry?) Nope, we know who propagandized this climate of violence.
