Gabrielle Giffords's Pet Charity Receives $18,000 In Seven Hours

The Community Food Bank of Tucson, Ariz., one of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords's (D-Ariz.) favorite charities, received more than $18,000 in donations during a span of about seven hours after the congresswoman's husband mentioned it in a statement.

Bill Carnegie, the CEO of the Community Food Bank, said the charity normally doesn't even receive donations from the local Tucson area, but since the Saturday shootings, donations have poured in from across the U.S. and Europe.

"They started at 8 a.m. this morning, and just keep pouring in from everywhere," he told HuffPost. "Most donations are around $50, so you can imagine the number of phone calls and activity on our website that have been going on to generate $18,000."

Carnegie said Rep. Giffords has been an active volunteer and supporter of the community food bank since she was a child, and that support has continued throughout her time in Congress

1. That dear woman has just become dearer in my estimation!
Concern and respect for the humanity of others seems to have been ingrained in her since childhood. What good things she has done thus far in her life!

I hold hope in my heart that she can return to her life of service...perhaps in a different way, but still active...please let it be so...

4. The more I hear about her, more in awe I have become. It started during the campaign season,
since I live in Az, I friended her on FB and was so impressed by her will and determination to win, and her positive message.

Just heartbreaking to say the least.

5. She's blue dog but not hideous yucky blue dog like Heath Shuler
She didn't vote for Nancy Pelosi but instead John Lewis. She could have gone with Shuler but the fact that she did vote for John Lewis says alot. Heck even I would be honored to have someone like John Lewis as the leader of the house dems.

6. I'm in awe too however I'm ashamed I didn't know
who she was before this. I most likely heard her name but never gave it any thought. One of the congressman in my area (but doesn't represent me) Elijah Cummings told our local news about how she sat next to him during the reading of the Constitution and he began to choke up. He was the second congressman to choke up and I then realized this woman not only is the truth in politics, she seems like a decent and kind human being with good common sense. For once a REAL politician that interacts with the ones she serves. Says a lot about her to do something like that.

Always seems the good ones always suffer. Dammit.
