Disappointed in The Daily Show :(
I just now saw the repeat of last night's show. I was counting on Jon to be the only voice to tell it like it is. I thought he might show one of his excellent montages of the various talking heads advocating violence. Instead, he made some rambling speech that didn't even make sense - then shows some silly thing about seniors having sex. I am a senior and did not find it funny - but that is a different story.

Haven't seen Colbert yet.

2. I'm in agreement here - missed opportunity
I'm not mad or anything and I think that he made some good points overall, but he really missed an opportunity to make an impact on the dialogue in the country.

I remember his rally to restore sanity and some of the points made during it were to call out the ridiculous rhetoric of the right - and then he made false equivalencies that just blurred the issue.

3. Agree with the missed opportunity, maybe he's been threatened
I am pretty sure our president has been threatened with the life of his children

12. Is that what the apologists are going with now? Wild conspiracies for reasons he's sold us out?
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. He sold us out because he finds it in his personal best interest to sell us out. Good for him, bad for us.

As far as Stewart goes, it isn't suprising he refuses to call out the wingnuts. Jon thinks Chris Wallace is a great becon of journalistic integrity.

4. I turned it off after the first segment. A huge disappointment. Colbert did much better.
Huffpo has clips - he even made a joke out of all the finger pointing between the left and the right - saying something was wrong with him because he hasn't figured out who to blame yet.

17. Jon's Philosophy of their turn then your turn attitude of cooperation, just allowing the other
side to have their turn.

7. Agreed.
I don't quite get the need some have for a vitriolic attack on vitriolic attacks.

9. We can't stop these vitriolic attacks without bringing them out into
the light of day. Part of doing that is showing exactly who is doing it and how they are doing it.

10. He does that all year long though. You can't argue that Stewart hasn't been
criticizing right wing rhetoric. He just didn't want to draw a connection between the murders in Arizona and the Rhetoric he's been commenting on constantly. And he explained cleary why he didn't want to. You might disagree with his assessment (particularly if you believe that the murders are Conservative commentator's fault).

16. I love JS but was a bit disappointed
Not in his message - I think that was fine. I don't think it's his job to blame specific people. And he did point out that the tone of our conversations has become scary and brought up the topics of vitriol and imagery as potential contributors to the madness.

But, I was slightly disappointed in the delivery. Somehow it didn't seem to engage me. It went on a bit too long, didn't seem all that coherent, the John Oliver piece in pajamas was unnecessary.

Normally I find JS to be the most engaging person on TV. Maybe my expectations were too high.

In any case, his message was fine and I think that's probably the most important thing.

19. That's how I feel too. He had all day to prepare something, but it seemed like he chose to
speak without any notes or teleprompter. Which is fine, I totally get that times like these are sometimes best suited for speaking from the heart as a human being trying to understand. But like you said, it lacked direction and that made it seem like it went on forever without any payoff. Good thought but poor execution by Jon.

8. Comedy shows have a real problem when something bad happens
they can ignore it and be called crass and unfeeling
they can do what he did for ONE night
they can cancel the show & rerun something.. (he did half of that)

13. He must have known the shooter was a loon
And not a far right or far left wing hack.
Registered independent, atheist with no strong ties to either political party.
And trying to tie him to either party would not be funny because you need some truth to be funny -
Truth is the guy was nuts.
I thought his bit WAS funny.

18. Stewart has been a disappointment since the rally
where he had a good point to make but then blew it by making false equivalencies. Then his self indulgent interview with Rachel Maddow only made things work. His problem is that he is trying to have it both ways. He wants to comment but then doesn't want to be held responsible for his commentary. He wants to be fair to both sides but then unfairly treats both as if they are the same. He claims that he's not a player on the field and has no skin in the game but then devotes a whole show to getting the 9/11 First Responders bill passed.

I recently saw a few episodes of the Larry Sanders Show on cable. Stewart played himself as a nice guy on the surface but an insecure dick underneath. I'm beginning to suspect that that is the true Jon Stewart and we just started seeing this the last few months.
