WTF is this 'Comforter-in-Chief' crap? |
|
I'm an Obama supporter - though I, like many here have some serious issues with some of his policies - but I flatly reject that there's any chance he's going to comfort me. My Momma comforted me when I was a boy. But she's dead and gone these 12 years and, as a matter of fact, I'm a grown-up now!!
Stupid fucking press!

|
that on this site you felt the need to give a disclaimer that you have "serious issues with some of his policies" before you got to the point of your post.

... they said on one of the channels last night that Giffords was in a medically induced coma and intubed ... not like they can have a chat or anything.
Get on with the business of fixing this damn disaster of a country, sir!

5. I think the nation needs to hear about the bravery of those individuals at the scene. |
|
I think it is totally appropriate for the President to say some words about the wrongness of political violence.

8. A *Federal* Judge was killed |
|
and a (*Federal*) Congresswoman's aide (*Federal* employee) was killed and Federal Congresswoman is in the hospital. They, like the President, are *Federal* employees.
And how is he going to single-handedly (you mean like a dictator?) "fix this damn disaster of a country"? Last I heard, the repukes basically recessed the House all this week.

after a national tragedy.
I don't understand why this idea bothers you, Can you explain?

7. Good post. The framing has shifted. We are no longer citizens to be respected and represented. |
|
We are children to be managed and protected and controlled.

20. Actually, I agree with you... |
|
I believe that he should address the nation and that Presidents do play a role in setting the tone after a national tragedy.
My response was really sort of knee jerk and based on my larger frustration that there has been a shift in our national rhetoric to put elected officials in the role of protectors and caretakers rather than representatives who are there to carry out our wishes. Over the past ten years we have seen a great erosion of our freedoms and multiple pieces of legislation passed against popular opinion, based on the justification that it is for our own good.
I dislike the phrase, "comforter in chief," but you're right...He definitely has a role in addressing the nation.

I will be frank in that I am not President Obama's biggest fan but he is doing the right thing here. People are just being nutty and/or posting for the sheer hell of it.

9. It's what a strong president does.... |
|
helps to bring the country through the madness with calm and sensitivity. This isn't the time for him to be partisan or to point fingers. He is very much the comforter-in-chief, there are people out there hurting. Afraid, mad, and scared of what may happen tomorrow.
Don't put down the President for attending the memorial for those killed and wounded on Saturday. If it bothers you don't turn on the tv. Others will be glad they do.

|
like it is right now, people need someone to keep a cool head & be in charge (or act like they are). It's called "Leadership."
or would you prefer Obama yell, rant, rave, & run around like a chicken without a head?

18. I'm going to be honest and say that, I really missed the "comforting' aspect |
|
of Bill Clinton speaking to us, when we were stuck with Bush and his friends after 9/11.
I still miss Peter Jennings' calming voice when tragedy strikes. Sorry, guess that makes me a child.

Reassuring the nation during troubling times or events is part of a president's job. If you don't want or "need" the reassurance, you can always tune out for a little while.
