19. Waaaaa! Is it too much to expect logic? Or are we just supposed to believe you, because we want to? |
|
Edited on Sat Aug-13-11 12:05 AM by patrice
If your point of view is belief-based, i.e. a religion, just admit that up front and THEN you can have respect. But posing as absolute knowledge is no more acceptable on the so-called Left than it is on the Right. Reality is NOT the same thing as whatever words you use to refer to it. It's much more complex and full of contradictions and synchronicities than our words. Some of us are willing to admit that up front about our own viewpoints others are not and in that they FAIL.

the possibility that they may be right. THAT'S WHAT RATIONALISM DOES. But they undercut their own positions every time they open their mouths. I know I'm supposed to assess what truth they bring to the table, but they don't allow anyone to do that, because they don't speak the language of science and rationalism, what is commonly referred to as knowledge.
It's all so very like the Tea Partyers, who think just saying a thing makes it so. One may TRY to respect a truth they might have, but you can't because we don't speak the same cognitive language.
Some put on a little presentation, a show, of superficial logic, but it always concludes with OWNERSHIP of the ABSOLUTE TRUTH, which is at least a mistake if not an outright lie. And if you test them on the rationale, you are the enemy. Sound familiar?

don't want to go there in the discourse, probably because like the rest of us they'd have to admit what biases, errors, or problems they are ignoring as the context to what they know. It's called science. SCIO, to know, and for all the big pep club for science around here, many do not appear to understand its basic traits. If you're doing pseudo-science, just say that up front and you will be accorded the level of respect that does somewhat deserve.
Anyway, their loss and they don't seem to even know it. They could get their points across. They could be respected for their OWN truths, but they refuse the discourse. It really IS too bad . . . for them.

It has been almost impossible for President Obama to do anything with all the GOP obstruction in the Senate since February 2010 (when Scott Brown was sworn in and we lost Teddy's seat) - without 60 votes to invoke cloture, trying to get anything passed is an up hill battle. And without a Dem House, it's damn near impossible ;(

He did NOT have a filibuster-proof super-majority for two years. Senator Franken was not sworn in until July 2009, and Senator Kennedy died in August 2009. Then since the day that Senator Scott Brown (R-MA) was sworn in February 2010 we've NOT had 60 dems in the Senate to invoke cloture to break the GOP's obstruction.

"16. Give him a Democratic congress then we'll talk...."
My response had nothing to do with filibiuster or even the threat thereof, merely numbers, but you typed "He did NOT have a filibuster-proof super-majority for two years..."
Was there a filibuster, or merely the threat of one from time to time. If there was one, or more, how many were there - or was the mere mention enough to scare off the opposition?
Give them a majority, they don't do anything with it, and then we make excuses for their failure to get anything done. Ya almost gotta love it.

|
The GOP have been obstructing EVERYTHING 'everyday'. The GOP is forcing the Senate to have cloture on EVERY bill and just about EVERY administrative and judicial nomination.
To say 'one from time to time' is ridiculous and laughable!
Time for folks to go do some in-depth research to see the truth about what is really going on.

37. Apparently my question was too hard. Filibuster, or mere threat of one? |
|
And isn't it true that the rules can be changed at the beginning of each session, and that the majority party chose NOT to change the filibuster rule? That would indicate they LIKE to be thwarted so they can point an accusing finger at the other guys.

So no, he did not inherit anything, he actively and vigorously sought it.

Democratic President was ever in bed with the Rethugs. Sickening if you ask me!
Fooled the world and the people of the US with his change thingy. What change did President Obama bring about, caved at every corner licking ass with the Rethugs.
He got into power with a majority and the American people were elated with his speeches, unfortunately, they were only speeches, health care still in the shiters, gitmo still ongoing, oh, lest you forget, medicare is not what he promised. I could go on and on but you know better than me, you are living it!

I don't even know why I bother!
The only waste are those denyin history as it happens in order to whine and moan like a bunch of fucking children yelling at their daddy! And I thought repukes were the only crazed ones around! Looks like I was wrong.
In bed with repukes does not these accomplishment reflect:
Obama Passed Health Care reform that none of the other Presidents were able to do, and which prevents insurance companies from denying insurance for pre-existing conditions, and allows children to remain covered by their parents' insurance until the age of 26, and provides subsidies for over 30 million poor who cannot afford insurance. Also expansed Medicaid to all individuals under age 65 who are up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level. Killed Osama Bin Laden, something that Clinton nor Bush were able to do. Withdrew the majority of troups from Iraq and set a timetable for Afghanistan. Repealed DADT which had been installed under Clinton. Signed Financial Reform law, established Credit Card Bill of Rights, eliminated subsidies to private lender middlemen of student loans, increased pell grants and created the first ever Bureau of Consumer Protection. Cut the cost of Medicare prescription by 50%. Extended same sex partners federal employee benefits and appointed more openly Gay officials than any other President. Passed the Stimulus and saved 3 million jobs lost by the last fucked up Republican President. Lifted restrictions granting Cuban Americans unrestricted rights to visit family and send remittances to the island. Created more Private sector jobs via incentives in 2010 than Bush had created in 8 years. Allowed first ever Disclosures of White House Visitors to the public. Reversed 'global gag rule'. Signed the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, giving the FDA the authority to regulate the manufacturing, marketing, and sale of tobacco for the first time . Reduced Crack Cocaine sentencing to same as powder Cocaine. Cut down on Nuclear arsenal via Start Treaty. Increased average fuel economy standards from 27.5mpg to 55mpg, starting in 2016. Signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, restoring basic protections against pay discrimination for women and other workers. Issued executive order to repeal Bush era restrictions on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.
And did this in less than 2.6 years, all the while the crazy Right and the childish Left had their foot up his ass.
