A Rush listening, FAUX worshipping ex co-worker story |
|
So a while ago at my place of work, I had to listen to a co-worker from the right talk incessantly on the phone (speaker phone) about his Rush loving ways. He'd go on and on about how the left is horrible, that liberals would be the death of this country, etc. We've seen it and heard it all before. He would talk about women in a very denigrating manner and was finally reported to HR for his talk about women. One phone call I recall was him talking to a lawyer friend and he was asking advice about caring firearms in DC (which isn't allowed) and he was very angry that he couldn't even leave his weapons in the trunk of his car while it was parked at the airport.
Unfortunately, I was involved in all the back and forth and had to relate things that I'd heard him say (both sexually and politically). He was given a warning and this didn't sit well with him. He was on the phone instantly to his friends, making threats and I remember him laughing and telling his buddy, "I just want to warn you, if you hear about a guy bringing in his glocks and shooting up the place, it was me." He thought this was funny, I was scared shitless, as were my other office mates. We immediately reported this conversation to HR and he was immediately fired and escorted from the building by security.
I guess the moral to this story is that I can see a direct correlation between hate radio/FAUX news and gun violence. When the Right and their mouth pieces try and say that liberals are making this shit up or trying to politicize Saturday's tragedy, I say someone has to open their friggin' mouths and say something or more of what happened on Saturday will happen in this nation. I think Rachel Maddow hit the nail on the head last night when she said, and I'll paraphrase, that we shouldn't be shocked by gun massacres, because they're so frequent. The question we should be asking is what cause them and how do we stop them?

2. I'm not going to name where I work because everyone's heard of it |
|
but it isn't known as a bastion of conservatism.

3. Yeah, I won't say where I used to work, either |
|
although it was not allowed, some would carry guns into the bldg, and others there were always trying to convert you to their fundie religion.
I don't miss it.

4. My place of employment before this one was another liberal leaning place |
|
And one of my co-workers was fired and escorted from the building there too. When they searched his desk they found a bottle of Jack Daniel's and a 9mm.

What's funny is that he blamed the whole damn thing on me and I'm not the one who went to HR about his comments on women, it was my male office mate. But I became the "target" of his comments to his friends on the phone. That's what really scared me when he talked about bringing his gun to the office.

8. You can't stop the violence from happening any more then you can stop any other |
|
crime from happening at best all you can do is slow it down and even then it is a hit or miss damage control thing. Even in the most repressive countries murder, rape and theft happen, look at how Muslim countries have the harshest punishments yet these crimes still happen in those countries, sure at a lesser rate then the US but they still happen.
What many of us are saying is it doesn't help when you have hate talk replacing political discourse, one side thinks calling for armed revolt if elections don't go the way they want it. Add to that the same peoples willingness to stop mental health care as well as the belief no crimes are caused from mental illness so mentally ill people end up in prisons which breed more anti social behaviors. Then theres the stigma of having a mental illness that prevents a lot of people to seek help also the mental ill don't think they have a problem it is those around them that are the problem.

10. I once had a troubled ex-fellow employee tell me |
|
"When I come into this place one day to kill everyone, I'm going to kill you last, because I like you, you were always nice to me."
I shit you not.
What do you say to that, "Gee...uh, er, thanks?".

11. You report that shit to HR, that's what you do! |
|
Everyone in our office is fairly politically aware and when somewhere starts talking about bringing guns to works and shooting people, there's no time to worry about being a snitch, that's for sure. I like my job a lot but I don't like it enough to die for it.
