I'm glad mental health care is being taken seriously, but will those who cited it in Tucson shooting

. . .follow through and make sure that more funding is available for mental health care. We know that the shooters mental health was not well, but I fear that many of the folks shifting the focus from political rhetoric to mental health are doing it not for the right reasons.

2. Every day of Giffords' long life will be a prod to make that happen
I can only hope at this point. But in the weeks and months ahead we can campaign for it with our representatives. I expect the Dems to introduce bills for it and the president to champion it.

The first thing is to make this horrible event be the symbol of why the HCR law cannot be repealed. People can't be left without health care and this new law should only be a start on the road to universal health care. And that includes mental health care.

4. Mental health will be taken seriously for about a week.
Then it'll be back to the same old shit.

Except that a couple states may pass laws making it easier to do a 72-hour hold on a person just for "acting funny".

Just think. Go out on the street holding up a sign protesting the war, and you could find yourself locked in the psych ward!
