Any time you hear the false equivalancy crap on your other boards, post this:
-- July 2008: A gunman named Jim David Adkisson, agitated at how "liberals" are "destroying America," walks into a Unitarian Church and opens fire, killing two churchgoers and wounding four others.

-- October 2008: Two neo-Nazis are arrested in Tennessee in a plot to murder dozens of African-Americans, culminating in the assassination of President Obama.

-- December 2008: A pair of "Patriot" movement radicals -- the father-son team of Bruce and Joshua Turnidge, who wanted "to attack the political infrastructure" -- threaten a bank in Woodburn, Oregon, with a bomb in the hopes of extorting money that would end their financial difficulties, for which they blamed the government. Instead, the bomb goes off and kills two police officers. The men eventually are convicted and sentenced to death for the crime.

-- December 2008: In Belfast, Maine, police discover the makings of a nuclear "dirty bomb" in the basement of a white supremacist shot dead by his wife. The man, who was independently wealthy, reportedly was agitated about the election of President Obama and was crafting a plan to set off the bomb.

-- January 2009: A white supremacist named Keith Luke embarks on a killing rampage in Brockton, Mass., raping and wounding a black woman and killing her sister, then killing a homeless man before being captured by police as he is en route to a Jewish community center.

-- February 2009: A Marine named Kody Brittingham is arrested and charged with plotting to assassinate President Obama. Brittingham also collected white-supremacist material.

-- April 2009: A white supremacist named Richard Poplawski opens fire on three Pittsburgh police officers who come to his house on a domestic-violence call and kills all three, because he believed President Obama intended to take away the guns of white citizens like himself. Poplawski is currently awaiting trial.

-- April 2009: Another gunman in Okaloosa County, Florida, similarly fearful of Obama's purported gun-grabbing plans, kills two deputies when they come to arrest him in a domestic-violence matter, then is killed himself in a shootout with police.

-- May 2009: A "sovereign citizen" named Scott Roeder walks into a church in Wichita, Kansas, and assassinates abortion provider Dr. George Tiller.

-- June 2009: A Holocaust denier and right-wing tax protester named James Von Brunn opens fire at the Holocaust Museum, killing a security guard.

-- February 2010: An angry tax protester named Joseph Ray Stack flies an airplane into the building housing IRS offices in Austin, Texas. (Media are reluctant to label this one "domestic terrorism" too.)

-- March 2010: Seven militiamen from the Hutaree Militia in Michigan and Ohio are arrested and charged with plotting to assassinate local police officers with the intent of sparking a new civil war.

-- March 2010: An anti-government extremist named John Patrick Bedell walks into the Pentagon and opens fire, wounding two officers before he is himself shot dead.

-- May 2010: A "sovereign citizen" from Georgia is arrested in Tennessee and charged with plotting the violent takeover of a local county courthouse.

-- May 2010: A still-unidentified white man walks into a Jacksonville, Fla., mosque and sets it afire, simultaneously setting off a pipe bomb.

-- May 2010: Two "sovereign citizens" named Jerry and Joe Kane gun down two police officers who pull them over for a traffic violation, and then wound two more officers in a shootout in which both of them are eventually killed.

-- July 2010: An agitated right-winger and convict named Byron Williams loads up on weapons and drives to the Bay Area intent on attacking the offices of the Tides Foundation and the ACLU, but is intercepted by state patrolmen and engages them in a shootout and armed standoff in which two officers and Williams are wounded.

-- September 2010: A Concord, N.C., man is arrested and charged with plotting to blow up a North Carolina abortion clinic. The man, 26-year--old Justin Carl Moose, referred to himself as the "Christian counterpart to (Osama) bin Laden” in a taped undercover meeting with a federal informant.

35. Serious Question - Have there been ANY? I don't think so. But dunno.
I know there has been the sentiment, especially during times when there seemed no hope of having a political solution to them stealing elections and then pissing on the Constitution and calling it fair.

Or engaging in war crimes.

I just don't think there is any equivilent to the actual dirty deeds. Some agitated talk, maybe but more in a blowing off steam, please talk me off the ledge kind of way.

Democrats are PRO - PEACE.

We don't incite to violence cause it's totally against the grain of our greatest values.

We believe in self governance by responsible people who are willing to set aside petty differences and even some big differences in the ultimate goal of living together as co-citizens of this once great country which is having major upheaval instigated by those in power who want us fighting among ourselves and killing each other off one way or another.

Our agenda is to put the grownups in charge and put some reasonable restraint on the out of control minority in this country who thinks only their way is right.

Vandalism and a few minor riots. That's it. And during those incidents, there was plenty of police violence and violence on the part of the state as well, much more than was actually committed by the leftists.

24. Another one
Joyce Kaufman and host (and almost) Allen West's chief of staff:

if ballots don't work, bullets will.

November 10, 2010—Public schools in Broward County, Florida, go into lockdown after an email threat is received by WFTL 850 AM. The email is sent to conservative radio host Joyce Kaufman in response to remarks she made at a Tea Party event in July ("If ballots don't work, bullets will"). The email expresses support for her view of the Second Amendment and says that to further "their cause...something big will happen at a government building in Broward County, maybe a post office maybe even a school." A phone call is then received at the station, allegedly from the emailer's wife, warning that he is preparing to go to a Pembroke Pines school and open fire.

81. More detail
I want to see the more detailed graph showing just how many Americans have guns, and how many they have. I suspect this graph is somewhat misleading (not in an evil way, but...) because a relatively small number of gun collectors own really large numbers of weapons. This suggests that 9 out of 10 Americans have a gun, but that obviously isn't the case - it's more like one American out of 10 has 10 guns and the others don't have any.

Anyone know where to get solid numbers on this?

64. And Obama once used the phrase "bringing a knife to a gunfight"
That's *exactly* the same as plastering crosshairs all over a map of your opponents' congressional districts. But of course, if they can't find real equivalents, they'll just make some up. From the comments thread of a Facebook friend who posted on this topic:

Well....there are these neat new cartoons of Palin as a MILP. "Mom I'd like to punch." Getting her teeth knocked out. Nice rhetoric. Also she is being hung in effigy. It's not crosshairs but I guess you bleeding hearts won't go that far.

Anyone actually seen these cartoons or effigies? I did a Google image search for "Mom I'd like to punch", but the only Palin-related cartoon I found was from a right-wing blog defending Poor Persecuted Sarah and showing the type of horrible things the people in her crosshairs are saying about her. No source was given. Funny that.

FWIW, he's a big fan of my son's You Tube page - he met him at a meeting after my son's principal was shot (and has done a Gabrielle - is a paraplegic and back to work this year! False Equivalency.

It is a continual meme - even Giffords herself used the meme when talking to TV Anchor people last March. She was asked to comment on her feelings regarding the RW nut job that blew up her office windows, and somehow she ended up segueing into the notion that "some on the left" are troublesome
too.

There is only one way for this nation to somehow resurrect itself as a great and powerful demodcracy, and that is to revive the Middle Class. But to keep that from happening, the marginalization of everyone on the left (i.e. us progressives) must continue. Apparently those in the Political Class cannot afford to have even a single dime slip from the rich to the middle incomed.

So the meme must replicate continually.

feet to the fire on this. I have called BS on these false equivalency arguments all day today. I have challenged this because I have argued and complained to the FCC about this very thing.

And by the way, the real question is-why the hell do we have the FCC if they aren't going to at least fine the hell out of these hosts or at least yank a few licenses over this hate speech over the public airwaves. Good way to raise money for the deficit or help some homeless people.

to do their dirty work for them....

Koch brothers started the Tea Party.. to set up Rubes to campaign against their taxes.. but it has evolved into an effective lethal Weaopn to target their enemies

http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2010/08/30/100830fa_fact_mayer
"...The Kochs are longtime libertarians who believe in drastically lower personal and corporate taxes, minimal social services for the needy, and much less oversight of industry—especially environmental regulation. These views dovetail with the brothers’ corporate interests. In a study released this spring, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst’s Political Economy Research Institute named Koch Industries one of the top ten air polluters in the United States. ..."

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/29/opinion/29rich.html?_r=1&ref=frankrich
"...Their self-interested and at times radical agendas, like Murdoch’s, go well beyond, and sometimes counter to, the interests of those who serve as spear carriers in the political pageants hawked on Fox News. The country will be in for quite a ride should these potentates gain power, and given the recession-battered electorate’s unchecked anger and the Obama White House’s unfocused political strategy, they might.
All three tycoons are the latest incarnation of what the historian Kim Phillips-Fein labeled “Invisible Hands” in her prescient 2009 book of that title: those corporate players who have financed the far right ever since the du Pont brothers spawned the American Liberty League in 1934 to bring down F.D.R. You can draw a straight line from the Liberty League’s crusade against the New Deal “socialism” of Social Security, the Securities and Exchange Commission and child labor laws to the John Birch Society-Barry Goldwater assault on J.F.K. and Medicare to the Koch-Murdoch-backed juggernaut against our “socialist” president...."
..."

http://unknownjournal.wordpress.com/2010/10/06/%E2%96%BC-report-the-kochs-their-nazi-past-american-oil-the-foundation-of-republican-ideology/

"...Notorious Nazis Ilse Koch, her husband Karl Otto Koch and Erich Koch are the ghosts of Koch Industries, who seized the U.S. conservative political agenda years ago and seem capable of seizing the government in total through the Tea Party. Ilse Koch was the Nazi’s specialist in making objects from human skin; was the only woman charged with war crimes; and along with her husband was in charge of one of the most horrific horror camps in Nazi Germany.

Koch Industries is the child of the violence of Buchenwald, widely regarded as one of wartime Germany’s most notorious “death camps”.

Information connecting Ilse and Koch Industries is hard to find but is a string of fragments, pieces of information that connects the American and German Kochs and this connection gives us a clear image of the sentiment behind the Tea Party and conservative American politics since the 1950s. Where is the connection between the German Koch’s and Fred Koch? Besides evidence the American Koch was related to Ilse’s family, Erich Koch (a high level Nazi official in charge of Prussia) invites Fred Koch to sell his oil in Nazi Germany when he is banned from doing business in the US. After the fall of Nazi Germany, Erich Koch and Fred expand the oil empire to the Soviet Union. Erich Koch had been in charge of Prussia for Hitler so his ties to the Soviet Union ran deep. A few years later the Soviets took Fred Koch’s oil and prosecuted Erich for war crimes – Fred Koch returned to the US, became anti-communist, and was allowed to do business in the States again.

American Fred Koch, and through association the Kochs from Germany, establish the John Birch Society in the 1950s in NY, which becomes the policy center for American conservatives. The society was built on Fred Koch’s oil money in the 1950s and can be thought of as the center of neo-conservative politics as well as the Tea Party movement. The ideologies of each are not the same – but the Tea Party fits into the neo-conservative put for colonial corporate police state as a sort of consumer citizen of the neo-conservative strategy mad as hell at the government and the legacy of liberalism, postmodernism, multiculturalism, taxes….etc.

Ilse and her husband Karl were tried by the SS before the war ended, accused of corruption. Her husband Karl Otto Koch was tried and sentenced to death in Nazi Germany. After the war, Ilse was arrested in the German American Zone, tried in front of a tribunal and sentenced, but was quickly pardoned by the American general appointed leader of the zone...."

50. I tried it and the list was ignored.
A few days ago, I posted an edited version of this on my local message board. The board is 90% repub. It was basically ignored and the accusations kept flying that "Dems do it too!" Someone even bought up Bill Ayers.

There was one glimmer of hope. One person stated that they would no longer support the tea party stating that they were "disgusted and appalled," so it wasn't all for nothing.

It is a great list, no doubt, but it doesn't work on the hardcore ones. Their minds are totally closed to any factual information.

52. I asked about that today on Facebook...
This was my initial post:
Not all Republicans are crazy. And, not all crazy people are Republicans. However, looking back at politically motivated killings over the past few years, I can't think of a single one that was perpetrated by a left leaning person. The killing of Dr. Tiller. The attack on the Holocaust Museum. The killing of cops in Pittsburgh. The guy who opened fire on a church in Tennessee. These were all commited by unbalanced individuals who watched Fox News or listened to conservative AM radio personalities like Rush Limbaugh. Can anyone name a similar occurence by someone who watches Keith Olberman or Rachel Maddow or any other left leaning pundit?

I was not surprised by the events of last Saturday. The signs were there; and still are. So maybe this guy didn't have a political axe to grind. Maybe he is just unbalanced. But it did happen to a Democrat. And it will happen again if the RW refuses to own up and tone it down. It's ironic that these are also the people who scream about taking personal responsibility!

So, I'll repeat the question: Can anyone name a similar ocurence by someone who watches the left?

I very shortly recieved this reply from someone I do not know:

Tim, lining up the crazies with conservatives does not work.
The Arizona shooter likes the Communist Manifestos and has stated he rejects God. Sounds like an 'enlightened' member of the Left, or someone on Obama's cabinet who uses Mao as a m...entor.
Grampa Munster, Clarence Dupnik, Sheriff of Pima County Arizona, progressive/liberal/Humanist-indoctrinated polititicians and Lamestream Media are piling on Sarah Palin, the Tea Party, talk radio and law-abiding gun owners for 'creating a climate of violence.'

Especially troubling to the limp-wristed, simpering, PC, Religious Left crowd are the - gasp! - maps with targets on them, used by Sarah Palin's campaign team. Oh! Very violent! Oh! Very Dangerous!

But let's take a look at some hate speech, some violence-prone language and a 'map with targets on it'.

Obama: “They Bring a Knife…We Bring a Gun”

Obama to His Followers: “Get in Their Faces!”...

...Obama on ACORN Mobs: “I don’t want to quell anger. I think people are right to be angry! I’m angry!”

Obama to His Mercenary Army: “Hit Back Twice As Hard”

Obama on the private sector: “We talk to these folks… so I know whose ass to kick.“

Obama to voters: Republican victory would mean “hand to hand combat”

Obama to lib supporters: “It’s time to Fight for it.”

Obama to Latino supporters: “Punish your enemies.”

Obama to democrats: “I’m itching for a fight.”

Biden telling a crowd, "If I hear one more Republican tell me about balancing the budget, I am going to strangle them."

Black Panther leader telling his neighbors through a bullhorn:

"You going to have to kill crackers! You going to have to kill they babies!"

Sarah Spitz, producer for NPR said if Rush Limbaugh were having a heart attack she would, “Laugh loudly like a maniac and watch his eyes bug out” as Limbaugh writhed in torment.

In boasting that she would gleefully watch a man die in front of her eyes, Spitz seemed to shock even herself. “I never knew I had this much hate in me,” she wrote. “But he deserves it.” http://washingtonexaminer.com/blogs/beltway-confidential/public-radio-producer-fantasized-about-watching-rush-limbaugh-die-journoli

{The following piece I wrote was published in The Columbian, Vancouver, Washington, July 16, 2010}

Journalism died with Obama election

Newsies huff and puff about racism. Very worried about traffic stops in Arizona, right?

But hardly any coverage from big print media or alphabet TV “news” shows regarding Department of Justice’s favorite, specially-protected specie, the New Black Panther Party’s Philadelphia leader Minister King Samir Shabazz, (also known as Maurice Heath), who swings billy clubs at voting places and who shouts through a bullhorn, “You going to have to kill the crackers! You going to have to kill they babies!” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0x0dM7fR1WQ&). Everyone with a computer can watch this hater spread his murderous program.

The media and their buddies are very worried about “racism” that insists that “illegal” means just that, and that non-citizens should not be allowed to come across our borders. But here’s a guy advocating murder of a race of people … and “the news” is silent.

More evidence that journalism died when Barack Hussein Obama (whose administration is behind the DOJ dropping the Black Panther election intimidation criminal case) ran for the presidency.

Bob Larimer
Vancouver

So I replied:
Bob, you seem to have missed the point. I never said all crazies were Republican. In fact I specifically said in the opening just the opposite. There are crazies on ...both sides. And I don't have a problem with fighting metaphors.A representative of any sort that is wiling to fight for you is a good thing. A Champion. It's the kill metaphors I have aproblem with. Sharon Angles "Second Amendment solutions" are scary. And she's not saying that she's going to pack heat. She's exhorting other people to "take Harry Reid out." Sarah Palin urging her followers to "re-load" is far different from getting in peoples faces.

You also neglect to answer my primary question. Please name a case of a left-wing motivated murder in recent years.

The exchange went on, but this is all I kept. He proceded to give me a list of links. The only one I followed up on, was about the HuffPo writer who murdered her former lover. Which, of course, falls under the category of domestic violence; not political violence. There was also something about a finger getting bitten off at an anti-health care rally? Then he threatened me. Words to the effect of: I've been debunking liberal lies for over twenty years. Do you really want to cross swords with me, friend? Keep up with spreading your liberal perversions and i'll sic my 5000 conservative friends on you. The choice is yours. (That is an extreme paraphrase, but I think it catches the essence.)
I proceded to point out that his threat kinda proved my point. He then provide incontrovertible fact (to him) that the AZ shooter was a lefty. At this point I shook my head and erased the PMs. This Dialogue all took place via PM. He didn't have the guts to use the comments.

56. I had a similar problem on another site.
So I pm'ed but I then cut and pasted his messages and my replies verbatim. He was not amused and threatened to take his ball and go home.

What was interesting was that because I didn't use commentary, was that the board rallied around me. Use truth and shine a light on the cowards. They have only themselves to blame and just because they use pm doesn't mean they have an expectation of privacy on a place like facebook. Heck, the tos says it plain as day.
Good exchange, next time make it private.

55. Great list! You'll have to bend over a whole lot just to find left-wing equivalency
Lemme try:
- College student protests? EHHHH! Usually the student protesters have been organizing non-violent events; there are non-fatal clashes with police though, and usually most of the damage is to property.
- The "Justice for Oscar Grant" protests in Oakland? Nope. Most of the people who did rioting were NOT residents of Oakland, and again property damage dominated the aftermath.
- The Weather Underground/'60s radicals? They split up after the Vietnam War, and the one fatal incident, the San Francisco Police Department Park Station bombing (1970), is still unsolved with little evidence blaming WU. While WU carried out bombings, again most of the incidents resulted in property not personal damage. Obama/Ayers anyone?
- Animal-rights activsts bombing scientists' homes: In 2010, a British court threw out the conviction of Mark Broughton, who served 10 years in prison for a conspiracy to arson Oxford University. In 2006, Donald Currie was arrested "after admitting conducting a campaign of terror against companies linked to Huntingdon Life Sciences." In August 2008, two UC Santa Cruz scientists' homes were firebombed. Four activists were prosecuted in federal court after a violent protest outside one UCSC professor's home.

I plan to send it to local papers, too including one of which often prints my LTTE.

67. One would hope a cogent argument has the power to change minds
But I starting to believe it doesn't most of the time. People seem to come down on one side or the other.

And sometimes, one side can be wrong. The right wing argument about rhetoric not mattering is wrong. From a communications theory perspective it is wrong, and runs counter to a multitude of studies about message amplification by the media. The majority of people who make up the mainstream media are educated. If they've studied communications, they've been exposed to theory.

But they still fan the flames of division, and the cycle repeats itself every day on nearly every news program.

It gets frustrating. In my home, the opinion is so one way or the other when it comes to something like gun control. It's the same set of reasons why gun control is bad. Evidence is either dismissed or discounted, and opinions don't change. When it comes to arguments in my home, I'm no longer going to bother debating. It doesn't end well, and opinions don't change. It turns into a broader circular conversation about politics and how every politician is the same.

It's a fact that the gun and magazine used to kill all of those people was purchased legally. It's also a fact that this type of weapon was banned ten years ago.

Yes, people can still get weapons on the street, but I doubt most people would bother or even know how to find something that's contraband.

71. there ARE none on the liberal side and saying someone
who shot up a bunch of innocent people was a liberal when they clearly are not doesn't change the fact that THERE ARE NO EXAMPLES OF LIBERALS DOING ANYTHING REMOTELY LIKE WHAT CONSERVATIVES/RETHUGS/TEA-BOOGERS HAVE DONE.

They need to be met with a robust and hearty "LIAR" when they say this.

72. Great list and I have to point out
<-- April 2009: A white supremacist named Richard Poplawski opens fire on three Pittsburgh police officers who come to his house on a domestic-violence call and kills all three, because he believed President Obama intended to take away the guns of white citizens like himself. Poplawski is currently awaiting trial.>

Anyone else notice the interesting logic here? I mean, if you really believe that the President is planning on taking away all your guns, is killing a bunch of police officers a particularly good way of ensuring you keep them?

80. I saw this on another site and it's what a shocking list.
And there is no comparable list of liberal violence. NPR is the worst. I keep hearing commentators on NPR state that the right and the left needs to step back from the violent rhetoric. Other than calling Tea Party pols (not members) complete hypocrites on the budget, I haven't been hearing that lefty violent rhetoric.

Thanks.

Peace,
