Dear Sarah Palin: A Giffords Cousin Speaks Out

Dear Sarah Palin: A Giffords Cousin Speaks Out

By Lynn Paltrow, National Advocates for Pregnant Women (NAPW)

Dear Sarah Palin:

I am writing today about how you are responding to and how you will respond to the assassination attempt on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and the murders of six other people.

By way of introduction and background, I am a cousin of Congresswoman Giffords. I am also an ally of Dr. George Tiller, the Kansas doctor who provided abortion services and who was assassinated on May 31, 2009.

When the Congresswoman’s offices were vandalized after her vote on healthcare reform, I wrote to her. As I recall, I congratulated her on her strong spirit in the face of that attack and other threats. I told her that I was proud of her courage on behalf of health care reform and sorry that she had to show the same courage as those who provide health care to pregnant women who need abortions and other reproductive health care services. Both have been the subjects of hateful, vitriolic language. Both have been put in rifle crosshairs.

In the aftermath of the murder of Dr. Tiller and the attempted murder of Congresswoman Giffords, many have spoken out about the role that hateful language played or might have played in encouraging these acts of violence. Immediately after Congresswoman Giffords was shot, many people voiced concern about such things as your "Take Back the 20" map targeting congressional districts of those representatives, including Congresswoman Giffords, who voted for health care reform by placing their districts in the crosshairs of a gun sight. Commentators have also noted your advice to people disappointed in the outcome of the 2008 elections to “lock and load” and “don’t retreat, reload.”

As I am sure you are now aware, Congresswoman Giffords herself had expressed concern about your map in particular. She said: “We need to realize that the rhetoric, and the firing people up and ... for example, we're on Sarah Palin's targeted list, but the thing is, the way she has it depicted, we're in the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district. When people do that, they've got to realize that there are consequences to that action...”

Your response so far, has been to defend the images and language you use. In an e-mail to Mr. Glenn Beck you said, “Our children will not have peace if politicos just capitalize on this to succeed in portraying anyone as inciting terror and violence.”

Ms. Palin, the moment calls for more than this. I am a strong supporter of the First Amendment and of your right to defend your words and to challenge those who seek to connect them to the assassination attempt and murders in Tucson, Arizona. I also know that there is often a very long distance between words and actions.

But even if your map and your language had nothing to do with these murders or any others that might occur in the future, a compassionate response would acknowledge that possibility and indicate a willingness, in her honor, in honor of the people who died, to consider this concern.

Whether or not you are willing to take this concern seriously, it is, nevertheless a critical moment to clarify your beliefs and principles. Now is the time to answer these questions and lead.

Do you believe it is appropriate to bring about political change in America through the use of or threat of violence?

When you suggest targeting candidates, use gun-sight crosshairs to do so, and speak repeatedly about guns, locking and reloading do you mean that violence is or could be properly used to encourage or ensure certain outcomes of elections or legislative votes?

If you do not mean literally that elected officials should be targeted with rifles and threatened by political activists armed with loaded weapons, what do you mean? What should politically frustrated Americans do when their views are not prevailing?

Throughout the course of history people have demonstrated that the most effective change comes through non-violent action. Many of us believe that the most courageous leaders and activists are those who are willing to be attacked for their beliefs not those who threaten to attack.

Ms. Palin, if you are among those who believe that political change can come about non-violently, without hate, violence, or the threat of violence, now would be an excellent time to say so.

is when the unrecs are most conspicuous. Later on, when the recs are in the dozens or hundreds it's well-nigh impossible to pinpoint the unrecs. It pays to get in early.

16. Sarah Palin.
Edited on Tue Jan-11-11 05:43 PM by bluestate10
Is having her Meg Whitman moment. As some may remember, at a critical juncture in the campaign for governor of California, Meg Whitman was asked whether she would agree to fore-go hateful words and images. Her opponent, Jerry Brown jumped at and accepted the pledge on the spot. Whitman dallied and finally, after a few speechless moments, failed to accept the challenge that Brown jumped at. That moment sealed Whitman's defeat. Voters that may have considered her at the last minute in the voting booth went over to Brown.

Palin has a make or break moment to show skeptical americans what she is truly made of, and so far, she is confirming their worst fears about her, that she is an ambitious, empty skirt that brings nothing to the table of leadership.

Look like the chances of Giffords not only surviving but being highly functional and possibly resuming her life as a public servant are excellent. If Giffords makes that journey, who does any sane person think americans will love the most, Giffords or Palin? Even if Giffords does not make the full journey back to near where she was, she is still immensely more beloved and respected than Palin ever will be, in Giffords, americans see a fighter that they can admire and who lives up to their admiration.

Enough time has passed and she did not seize the day to save her so-called "good name". This is finally...Palin's defeat. I look forward to the day Giffords herself sends as concise a message to Palin as her cousin Paltrow just did. That will be momentous!

Money and how to make more of it.

She doesn't care about rights. She doesn't care about Republicans. She doesn't care about this shooting.

She cares about where her next check is coming from.

39. This letter is gracious, diplomatic and factual
all the qualities that piss off or go over the heads of airhead conservatives.

Sarah probably won't even read it. she has the Karl Rove like press and PR machine around her allowing her to live in a bubble.

I agree with one poster..

this marks a turning point in Sarah's career. my bets are, media that matters stop giving her a bully pulpit. (forget fox, they are losing audiences left and right).

I wrote on my facebook I wanted to get that "ugly stupid bitch off my TV Set" and I got ridiculed for my name calling. I was impressed the letter write did not resort to that.. but I did mention that I had all the free speech rights of name calling possible.. but that I was not suggesting folks set their gunsights on Sarah in response, and therein lie the difference between my speech and Sarah Palin's speech/actions.

To my mind, the good will always win out over the bad, because the historical record and the youth are watching this closely.

and history will not tolerate Sarah's missed moment at growing humility and showing true leadership.

What I"m pretty upset about is Obama staying out of the fray and as his usual pansy ass self, he's ignoring a great opportunity to give the country a teachable moment.

I continue to believe Obama with his silence is as deafening as Stupid Airhead Alaska Quitter barbie without a clue... Failin Pailin.

We should have heard a letter like this from Obama's white house.

He couldn't even get on a plane for a fellow democrat... Obama is shameful at this moment in history.

For those teabaggers trolling around on progressive-liberal sites, hear this: There is a HUGE difference between passionate, opinionated commentary and actual hate speech (& other veiled threatening rhetoric)!

It's stunning watching o'reilly-hannity last night blaming the 'liberal media' for connecting the dots over the last 2 years (something FUX NEWS rarely does!). Hannity looked like he was crapping his undies as the camera were rolling.

Palin is like the Scorpion in the story of the the Scorpion and the Frog.

One day a scorpion was walking along the riverbank trying to find a
way to get across the river that separated him from his desired
location when he came across a frog sitting alongside the riverbank.

The scorpion walked up to the frog and asked the frog if he would take
him across the river. The frog quickly replied, "No, I would not give you a ride."
The scorpion then asked him why. The frog replied,"Because Mr. Scorpion if I gave you a ride on my back you would sting
me and I would drown."
Quickly the scorpion replied, "But Mr. Frog, if I stung you then you would drown and if you drown then I would drown
also."
The frog thought for a moment and then said, "I guess you're right, then I will give you a ride."
The scorpion jumps on the frog's back and they start crossing the river.
Half way across the river the frog suddenly feels a sharp pain in his back, as the scorpion stings
him. The frog immediately starts to panic as he feels the venom race
through his veins and he quickly begins to become paralyzed.

Just as he is taking his last breath and about to go down, the frog looks at
the scorpion and asks "Why did you do it? You promised not to sting
me! Now we are both going to drown!"

The scorpion replies, "I'm sorry, but I could not help it - it's my nature".

85. Excellent letter -- I hope she sent this to Palin.
"What should politically frustrated Americans do when their views are not prevailing?"

That sentence reminded me of one of the questions I had to answer on a questionnaire when I was enrolling my son in kindergarten many years ago: How does your child react when he/she doesn't get his/her way? Sarah Palin, how do you react when you don't get your way? A map with crosshairs over your "targets", instructing your posse to "lock & load" & "don't retreat -- reload". Kindergarten teachers expect more out of their 5-year-old students. Isn't that interesting.

86. Or just ask her if a Democratic leader repeatedly said things like
"We need to twist the knife, not just stick it in.
"Now isn't the time to sheath our swords but slice and dice every chance we can."
"There is more ways than one to skin a republican."
"Each seat we win back is another scalp on our belt or a trophy for our walls."

And the same leader was photographed field dressing large dead mammals and putting out posters with knives sticking into republican districts, you would understand it was just a metaphor. And I am sure that if a group of republican congressman were found disemboweled and scalped by some loon you would accept this leader's condolences to their families. Right.
