Mayor’s office proposes city get out of trash business
TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) -
Mayor Mike Bell's office has proposed to Toledo City Council that the city transfer trash collection services to the Lucas County Solid Waste Management District.
The mayor's office wants council to approve the plan by the middle of February so that the county can work out a contract with a private vendor by April or May, and take over trash and recycling operations on September first. The proposed change is projected to save the city nearly $3 million a year.
Council's Rob Ludeman wants this change to end the trash controversy once and for all. "What I'm hearing from folks is they're not opposed to paying a trash fee," said Ludeman. "But they'd like to have some consistency, it has gone up and down up and down."
The mayor's office says that if council chooses to reject the proposal, the alternative is to raise the trash fee from $8.50 per month to $17.25 per month, and from $5.00 per month for seniors to $8.50.
