I understand how difficult and do not wish to see them hounded. However, if they don't at least put out a message via a spokesperson, they may well be implanting a very negative (and undoubtedly wrong) impression upon the public. As hard as this will be for them, it is also the only way they are likely to be left alone in the future. I really do hope their son is mentally ill and not just the cruelest of bastards--including to the two people who undoubtedly loved him.

The Loughners had returned home from shopping in their white Chevy truck to find sheriffs' cars at the house and deputies stringing crime scene tape around the area.

Smith said he had seen the news on television and went to tell them Jared Loughner was the suspect.

"She almost passed out right there," Smith told the Journal. "He sat in the road with the tape up and cried."

Smith told the Journal that Amy Loughner was having a "nervous breakdown."

"He's a mess and she is worse," he said.

Smith, who has been bringing Amy and Randy Loughner their mail, said the couple "couldn't say much, they were crying too much. They can't talk without breaking down ... they're hurting."

Smith went on to say the parents are devastated. They "want to know, where did they fail?”

It was a wise decision to do it the way they did. Their representatives handed out copies of the written statement to the press camped in front of their house. On CNN, reporter Susan Candiotti read the statement on camera.

This is a very difficult time for us. We ask the media to respect our privacy. There are no words that can possibly express how we feel. We wish that there were so we can make you feel better. We don't understand why this happened. It may not make any difference, but we wish that we could change the heinous events of Saturday. We care very deeply about the victims and their families. We are so very sorry for their loss.

It's a shame that they have to be prisoners in their own home, especially now. What would really help them is some benefactor who could provide a "secure, undisclosed location" where they might be able to begin dealing with all of this without the intrusion of the media.
