Poll question: Which would be better to push for in light of the recent tragedy?
Sorry, no third choice on this one.

3. would that somehow be mandatory?
and if not how do you persuade the mentally ill to make the correct choice?

I agree that it would be nice if we could help more people, I just don't think it is as easy as you imply.

I see no reason to assume this person would have sought. He was urged to do so by his school and still ignored the problem.

6. I believe that children and young adults could all be made more aware of mental health issues
If more information was given to them in middle school and high school, perhaps people would be more inclined to direct troubled friends and acquaintances to available resources.

Other than having homosexuality being presented to us as a deviation from the norm (it was the early 1970s), I can't recall any classes or presentations in which the kinds of psychiatric disorders were discussed, until I took my first psych class at UCSD.

4. Even if we had the best mental health care, how is it going to help

if the individual doesn't seek it?

8. You can't force anyone into care, but you can encourage them
It seems that everyone around Jared Loughner for the last few years knew he was disturbed. I can't say that nobody tried to direct him to some professional help, but I haven't seen any indication that anyone did anything other than try to avoid contact with him.

2. Fairness Doctrine and revoke Clinton's Telecommunications Act
It gave us the RW media monolith we are suffering from now.

7. Uh oh, the gun fans who are always calling Dems "gun grabbers"
are not gonna be happy to see this. Currently the fairness doctrine option leads by 2:1.
