GOP Representative Wants To Erect Plexiglas Shield Around Congress
Edited on Tue Jan-11-11 06:22 PM by RamboLiberal
Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.) recently announced plans in the wake of the Arizona shooting to reintroduce a piece of legislation that would provide for the creation of Plexiglas-like wall that would enclose the House gallery, preventing visitors from being able to throw explosives onto the floor.

"The Architect of the Capitol shall enclose the visitors' galleries of the House of Representatives with a transparent and substantial material, and shall install equipment so that the proceedings on the floor of the House of Representatives will be clearly audible in the galleries," the legislation reads, according to CBS News.

From CBS News's report:

A past version of the legislation, which will be reintroduced in the wake of the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords on Saturday, references past attacks on Congress. Among them are a 1915 bombing by a man protesting U.S. involvement in World War 1, the shooting of five members of Congress by Puerto Rican nationalists during a House vote in 1954, and a the placing of a bomb by the Weather Underground in a Senate bathroom in 1971. (The bomb went off early and no one was hurt.)

Peter King, Leading Republican, To Introduce Strict Gun-Control Legislation

Rep. Peter King, a Republican from New York, is planning to introduce legislation that would make it illegal to bring a gun within 1,000 feet of a government official, according to a person familiar with the congressman's intentions.

King is chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. The proposed law follows the Saturday shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and a federal judge that left six dead, including the judge, and 14 wounded.

3. Really? I thought this was all a controversy
made up by the left to exploit a tragedy? He's worried that a lunatic will get onto the house floor with an explosive? Why would someone do that? It's not like there is any violent rhetoric or anything. They are all anti-violent god-fearing peace lovers.

4. There is nothing like fear to bring people together...
I suspect the suspension of the Bill of Rights will also ride fear to a majority vote.

5. Hey, I want a law for me!
No one can carry a gun within a mile of me. No one can cut me off in traffic. No one can interrupt me when I am speaking. No one can serve me the wrong meal in a restaurant. I think the death penalty is appropriate.

6. Peter King's law could be interpreted as a strict gun control law.
Technically, a mailman is a government official, so if he comes to your mailbox, he's probably within 1,000 feet of your residence, meaning you can't have guns at your residence. Can't walk out on public streets either - you might bump into a mailman, and accidentally commit a felony!

7. Now why the heck would a Republican congressman want to make sure
that nobody with a gun gets near him? I thought all the gun nuts LOVED the Republicans ...

9. I think all members of Congress should wear full-body Kevlar armor
And be protected with Uzi-carrying bodyguards, four to each member. Oh, and gas masks - can't forget about the gas masks.

Can't be TOO careful these days.

10. I think that since these are the folks who've made it possible for every nutcase...
...to have high-powered weapons with multiple high-capacity
magazines, they should have *ABSOLUTELY NO SPECIAL PROTECTION*
separating them from their constituents. This would be a nice place
to apply that principle that the Republicans are espousing that
Congress shall make no law that applies to them in a different
way than it applies to the citizenry at large.
