Jesse Helms stopped Ralph Yarborough from voting on the House floor? |
|
I heard somebody on MSNBC today say that Jesse Helms stopped Rep. Ralph Yarborough, physically from getting to the House floor to vote for the Civil Rights Act in 1964??
I remember Smilin' Ralph very well. He was a congressman from Houston and my parents campaigned for him for Governor at the State Convention sometime in the 50s. In '58 they campaigned for Henry B. Gonzalez for Governor at the state convention as delegates.
They said there were walkouts, rump conventions, and fist fights! The good old days!

1. I don't know how Helms could do that |
|
Helms wasn't elected to Congress until 1972.

3. I think it was Strom Thurmond in the Senate. |
|
Ralph was a senator, not a Representative.
