Any uber-Alpha Manly Man military types that you know who are just vowing to leave once their enlistment term is up, if DADT is repealed?

1. I don't know any
Either people like their careers too much to leave, or they just don't give a damn whether it's repealed or not.

On the same topic...
"I'm going to retire before DADT gets repealed...because now homosexuality is going to be optional, and I want to get out before it's mandatory."

2. That kind of stuff will happen few and far between
I expect a lot of ho hum about it in the ranks.

4. I dunno, people at Offutt are pretty "eh, whatever" about it
Security Forces, Navy, Marines, linguists, maintenance, et al.

I think this whole "it'll cause disruption in the Armed Forces" is just a myth. I worked at the chapel on base and they had a few discussions about the repeal, but it's not like they were panicking about it.

6. People will be pretty much focused on their duty as always
The complainers will simply be told that their complaints have been heard and leave it at that.

If anything, the disruptors will find themselves on the short end of the stick post haste

8. My hubby served 21 years in the Navy
we only knew ONE person in 20+ years of service who was homophobic and probably would leave the service.

You do the math as to the number of people he met... in nine subs and three shore commands, mind you he served with this guy TWICE.

9. None of them at the local gay bar
But a lot of the other fellows say they'll join if DADT is repealed.

:)

I served aboard a submarine with a couple of known gay men. No problem whatsoever. My wife served at CINCPACFLT and her immediate boss, a chief petty officer, was gay. Again, no problem at all. Sure, a few people would have a problem with it, but that's manageable.

Remember, not too long ago men claimed they would not serve alongside the "negro." Now no one ever talks about it and the repeal of segregated forces hasn't hurt enlistment.

And men also claimed they couldn't serve alongside women, either. My wife was a 4.0 sailor in her command and earned several commendations.

Gays will one day serve alongside the other sorry sons of bitches who were stupid enough to sign up. They'll fit right in.

10. Fully agreed
Other place I had a little trouble... when the old guys found one of my young bucks was gay.

So we had a one way conversation... to make a long story short, one of my old guys, yes I did point to the door but decided to stay, and this young buck became the best of buddies after a year or so.

I predict a similar development in the US Armed Forces.

11. I spent twenty years in the military...
on numerous Aircraft Carriers and other places less friendly. I knew several guys who were gay but never bragged about it before DADT when being gay got you sent to prison. I knew one woman who was a Lesbian. She served on a supply ship and played Dungeons & Dragons with me and some others when we were in port.

I knew a number of people who would have left at my last command in 1994 and 1995, and they were all really religious types. That type of intolerance seems to go hand in hand with Christian fundamentalism. I knew a lot of people who were intolerant of gays but would not have left the military. They were professionals.
