3. I don't suppose the term "global averages" would dissuade any
global warming deniers from pointing to this as "proof" that science is wrong.

4. FWIW, I use the term "climate change."
That gives the deniers much less traction.

Know what I mean?

9. Sorry, I should have linked the article. Here ya' go:
"After big snow and ice events in the Southeast, Plains, and Midwest this week, 49 out of the 50 states currently have snow on the ground – yes, even Hawaii, where snow falls in Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea all winter."

10. I don't know about today, but there frequently is...
Haleakala on Maui frequently has snow, as do other volcanos and mountains due to their altitude.

One example:

Snow Closes Haleakala Summit
Winter Weather Also Covers Big Island's Mountains
POSTED: 11:17 am HST January 29, 2008

HONOLULU -- Officials at Haleakala National Park on Maui have closed the road to the summit because of snow, ice and high winds.

The road was closed at 5:45 a.m. Tuesday and is not expected to open until at least 8 a.m. Wednesday. Park officials said the visitor center at the park headquarters, at the 7,000-foot elevation, is open, but beyond that, the road is shut down.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for the summit of Haleakala, and the summit areas of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea on the Big Island, until 6 a.m. Wednesday. A cold upper low pressure system is responsible for bringing frigid air and unstable conditions to the state's three tallest mountains, with the freezing level down to 7,000 feet.

One to 3 inches of snow may fall through Wednesday.

Haleakala is Maui's tallest mountain, with an elevation of 10,025 feet above sea level. Mauna Kea's summit is the highest point in the state at 13,796 feet, with Mauna Loa close behind at 13,679 feet.

15. Well, not always
but the Big Island and Maui peaks (over 10,000 ft.) do get some a couple of times each winter. The people who work up at the observatories on Mauna Kea have to use chains 'n' stuff!

16. It may not be a state any longer since
Obama was born there. Maybe the Birthers made it part of Kenya.
