Blood libel in this context is NOT accidental
Edited on Wed Jan-12-11 12:38 PM by nadinbrzezinski
she is reaching to her zealots, who see themselves as the new people of Israel persecuted by the secular world. She is telling them, in this dog whistle from hell, that they can and should expect a progrom. This is what is going on.

So yes, Sarah does know what the term means. So does the rest of the right. As horrific as the term is, no, I will not give her a pass. They know exactly what they are saying.

Blood libel is a very charged term historically, and they are not talking of the Jew shot on Saturday. THey are talking of themselves as Jews... and telling us what is going on in the media IS a progrom.

Jayzus, next I know they will claim we want to put them in concentration camps...

This is quite the step up in the rhetoric.

100. They want to ultimately SHUT US UP
They don't like the mirror we are putting up to their faces. They want to shut us up, and continue to enable them in their agenda.

It's sort of like when my alcoholic ex husband, be drunk, want more booze, ask me to go get it for him, I didn't want to do it...SOOOO he would play/press my button, "Okay I will go get it myself" Well I knew he was too drunk to drive, he could kill someone or himself, I would end up going to get that hated vile putrid booze for him, I enabled him. He silenced me, by threat, to enable his sickness.

Same here.

They want to silence us, by threat, to enable them to continue their vile agenda.

We have a choice.

4. So, essentially, Sarah is, at some level, an Identity Christian
Edited on Wed Jan-12-11 12:46 PM by Ken Burch
http://www.adl.org/learn/ext_us/Christian_Identity.asp?xpicked=4&item=Christian_ID

From the link:

"Christian Identity is a religious ideology popular in extreme right-wing circles. Adherents believe that whites of European descent can be traced back to the "Lost Tribes of Israel." Many consider Jews to be the Satanic offspring of Eve and the Serpent, while non-whites are "mud peoples" created before Adam and Eve. Its virulent racist and anti-Semitic beliefs are usually accompanied by extreme anti-government sentiments. Despite its small size, Christian Identity influences virtually all white supremacist and extreme anti-government movements. It has also informed criminal behavior ranging from hate crimes to acts of terrorism."

As they say...the mask slipped.

"I am sorry if this does not fit that reality."

I don't know what you mean by that.

"And the DOMINIONIST movement is very close to the Identity Movement. "

Certainly there is overlap -- CI are dominionist ... but dominionist isn't the same as CI and there are lots of dominionist groups that have no connection to CI.

I'm not disputing the dog whistle, and this is far from the first time she's done something like that. But I haven't ever seen any concrete evidence linking SP to CI.

107. The Christian Dominionist movement reminds me of the worst of any fundie religion.
They seem to want women to be concubines when you get right down to it. And they do talk in these code words all the time. I don't know how many of them there are, but they have an inordinate amount of political power, and they have the cult mindset.

I dig all you're saying, but I'm double checking. The 'dog whistle' is those code words, right?

I'm not familiar with that metaphor, but it sure seems to fit here. Its like, they expect people outside their movement to not hear, like people don't hear what dogs can hear. And her followers will go bonkers at the sound of the whistle like an attack dog.

More complicated than Pavlovian techniques, but same effect.

But you busted them on it. A lot of great posts from here are being used to get the points we need to get across nationally. Glad they picked up on your words.

109. Yes dog whistle politics is exactly that
words that your base will understand and make no sense to the rest. A less histrionic example but used regularly, is state rights. It means one thing in "normal America," and a whole different thing in the right of the spectrum.

The same goes for things like entitlements... why at times over these parts some of us scream when our side uses the other side's memes.

About those old code words. What's amazing is that they haven't really generated any new ones.

There was a thread somewhere here with a quote from some official in AZ giving a rant about the socialists, communists, etc. The themes haven't changed since the JFK assassination, even.

But then, we finally learn last year that the Koch family created the John Birch Society of that era and created the Tea Party. SS-DD!

I am stunned that younger people are falling for these things, but after growing up since RR was POTUS, I guess they don't see the pattern.

I assume you're referring to Thomas Muthee, the Kenyan preacher who spoke at SP's church in Wasilla about spiritual warfare and how prayer was used to defeat a supposed witch in the community. (wikipedia article on Muthee here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Muthee.)

Christian Identity theology holds that white europeans are the actual descendants of the Biblical Israelites, while all other races are, for one reason or another, evil, so Muthee is an unlikely candidate for a Christian Identity message.

173. OH. MY. GOD. Thanks for the link...I guess.
Here we have it straight from the horse's mouth...the horse's ass, actually:

WE BELIEVE the White, Anglo-Saxon, Germanic and kindred people to be God's true, literal Children of Israel. Only this race fulfills every detail of Biblical Prophecy and World History concerning Israel and continues in these latter days to be heirs and possessors of the Covenants, Prophecies, Promises and Blessings YHVH God made to Israel. This chosen seedline making up the "Christian Nations" (Gen. 35:11; Isa. 62:2; Acts 11:26) of the earth stands far superior to all other peoples in their call as God's servant race (Isa. 41:8, 44:21; Luke 1:54). Only these descendants of the 12 tribes of Israel scattered abroad (James 1:1; Deut. 4:27; Jer. 31:10; John 11:52) have carried God's Word, the Bible, throughout the world (Gen. 28:14; Isa. 43:10-12, 59:21), have used His Laws in the establishment of their civil governments and are the "Christians" opposed by the Satanic Anti-Christ forces of this world who do not recognize the true and living God (John 5:23, 8:19, 16:2-3).

WE BELIEVE in an existing being known as the Devil or Satan and called the Serpent...who has a literal "seed" or posterity in the earth...commonly called Jews today. These children of Satan (John 8:44-47; Matt. 13:38; John 8:23) through Cain (I John 2:22, 4:3) who have throughout history always been a curse to true Israel, the Children of God, because of a natural enmity between the two races (Gen. 3:15), because they do the works of their father the Devil (John 8:38-44), and because they please not God, and are contrary to all men (I Thes. 2:14-15), though they often pose as ministers of righteousness (II Cor. 11:13-15). The ultimate end of this evil race whose hands bear the blood of our Savior (Matt. 27:25) and all the righteous slain upon the earth (Matt. 23:35), is Divine judgment (Matt. 13:38-42, 15:13; Zech. 14:21).

YIKES!!!

33. All civil wars start with fringe groups
they feel they are cornered, like in all civil wars. We are in the midst of a cold one... sooner or later, if the words don't calm down, they are not... we go hot.

The American Civil War had a generation before of increased language.

Modern civil wars... think of what happened Saturday... because that is how they look, especially in the beginning. Regular armies fighting regular armies on a battlefield, that is very much early to mid 20th century. Rarely (in Kosovo) do you see an actual unformed force doing what unformed forces usually do.

It is more like the Red brigades, IRA... things of that nature. So who will fight it on the government side, if it stays at that level... the FBI. But I expect MORE not LESS shootings and bodies to stack up. If they wanted to stop this, they could. But these dog whistles don't help.

America's luck is running out, and some of these Rightwing monsters do get lose, as happened the other day. That does make me afraid, and very sad, but it won't silence me or make me change my life to accommodate their terrible little Acts of Will.

11. Projection definitions again....
"Projection is the opposite defence mechanism to identification. We project our own unpleasant feelings onto someone else and blame them for having thoughts that we really have."

"A defense mechanism in which the individual attributes to other people impulses and traits that he himself has but cannot accept. It is especially likely to occur when the person lacks insight into his own impulses and traits."

"Attributing one's own undesirable traits to other people or agencies."

"The individual perceives in others the motive he denies having himself.”

129. Palin did not what she was saying.
Some meat-head used the term over the weekend in a WJ editorial defending wing-nut hate and lunacy. As she would, Palin picked up the term without understanding a f****** thing about what it meant. Palin wants to take on Obama in the 2012 election, she is not a minuscule ant in Obama's shadow, republicans would be ill advised to nominate her for county dog catcher.

if anyone is interested in her faith. Her husband was part of a secessionist movement in AK, which Sarah supported. Her demand that she be allowed to lie about it became an issue within the McCain camp.

He went to religious school as a child and he said blood libel is well known to Jews and it is a horrible term and the only good to come of this is if more people find out what the term means. It's arcane and has been pretty much lost to this generation. It is an awful, awful term. I asked him how someone as stupid as Sarah Palin knows the phrase and he said she probably didn't, but her handlers do.

from the presidential level down to those at Palin's level and below fall into two categories, those who are intelligent enough to be depended upon to follow the party line and those who are useful idiots who will follow the party line if steered properly. That's why they're going to ridiculous lengths to try to divert attention away from the political aspect of this crime.

Mr. and Mrs. Greenspan have been right in the middle of this giant "pump and dump" scam of the American economy for a long tome, and they do think and act in a disciplined, long-term way. They're protecting their investment until the remaining, liquid assets are safely moved offshore. Then they'll do the old burn for the insurance scam. Maybe, events have already moved on to that latter stage, a little ahead of schedule, and this is the inevitable ignition of all that flammable material that's been piling up.

57. WE Need To Change The Way WE Communicate...
I wanted to post a topic because I think that what I am saying has been ignored by the experts, but is critically important. I do not have enough posts to start a topic. If one of you finds this to be a worthy topic on it's own, PLEASE re-post it into its own thread...

Right-wing leaders have discovered that Conservative voters, and many Moderates, respond to fear. They have honed their craft so well that issues and facts no longer have the impact that worry does. They use the macro to overwhelm the micro, and fact resides in the micro.

Conservatives fear Liberals because they are convinced that the Left brings not discomfort to their way of thinking, but doom. We are painted as destroyers of everything that is righteous. They feel little option other than to reject everything about us and our policies.

WE ARE NOT REACHING CONSERVATIVE VOTERS WITH OUR NUANCED ARGUMENTS. Do you all get the magnitude of this? In the past, when both sides used nuanced approaches to the argument, facts had a chance to sway opinions. Now, our facts sound like trivia compared to the magnitude of their doomsday talk. By their personality type and chemical brain make-up, they respond differently than we do. Believe it or not, this has advantages, in life and even to us, should we choose to accept it...

WE HAVE TO CHANGE OUR APPROACH WHEN MAKING OUR CASE TO THEM. We must tap into their emotional responses. We have to paint a picture of their future under their leadership. We need to undermine their belief in their leaders (who rightfully deserve to be undermined). We need to make the connection between their economic policies and Communist nations(China). We need to show them what pollution is doing and will do to their children. We need to explain what war costs each of us, both in our wallets and socially. If we don't do it, we'll never reach them. If our current best efforts are failing, more of the same is not going to help. I am not talking about using lies to scare them; we need to use the TRUTH to scare them. Right now, they're not absorbing the truth because we present the information in a form that their minds cannot accept.

The best part is that, while we can co-opt their approach, they cannot use ours. Facts don't support their side, in most cases. We have an massive advantage, should we choose to take it.

This will require a major shift in our approach. We will need experts, not only in politics, but in the workings of the human mind. It's virtually free to institute; the challenge is whether or not we have the courage to accept this new way to communicate.

Thanks for your time. I hope this stimulates some discussion.

76. A most astute observation, nadin. I hadn't thought of it that way, but
it makes perfect sense, and is all the more scary in that respect.

Her followers, as a group, are seen as being accused (by the Dems, the Left, the secular world) of having committed a horrific crime. They are all victims.

Furthermore, I agree with you that this is an escalation in the rhetoric. A major escalation, IMO. She's actually continuuing to ramp up the rhetoric of violence. This kind of thing speaks to the primitive brain to promote anger and hatred toward the "other" who are seen as persecuting them.

In Medeval Europe the Jews had virtually no ability to fight back against this accusation. But this is the 21st century, and Palin's followers are ARMED.

Mark my words...

http://www.harpyness.com/2011/01/12/sarah-palin-and-blood-libel/

The author of this blog was wondering if Sarah Palin was also dog-whistling to neo-Nazis and white supremacists.

She uses this dog-whistle word right after a Jewish congresswoman was shot.

:scared:

94. She doesn't know
Sarah Palin could never come up with this on her own. Her words were too coherent to have been self-penned.

The beauty of Sarah is that she is not inquisitive. If she believes that the direction given to her is on track, she will follow it. So far, she has been given advice that is brilliantly constructed to promote the Palin mystique.

This whole affair will hurt Palin and the Right greatly, not among their base, but with moderates. The middle finds all of this quite clearly disgusting. Crosshairs, guns, and a dead 9-year-old is very clear to to moderate families.

We're sometimes too immersed to see what the casual observer sees.

97. Question about Blood Libel...
Question:

Is the Blood Libel the act of sacrificing a Christian or...

The libeling of Jews by claiming that they sacrifice a Christian?

Who penned the term?

If the first is true, then I can see no benefit to using it in her speech (with the Right being such strong political supporters of Israel, Yes, there are many Anti-semites on their side, but it's an uneasy truce).

Maybe the GOP put this in to sabotage her and purge her from the party? Perhaps they're tired of the negative attention she brings. She'd never catch the phrase on her own. She's clueless.

But, if the phrase refers to the libeling of Jews, then she has little to fear from either Jews or anti-semites.

118. it WAS a call to anti-semites. that was its entire purpose of the lie
the term "blood libel" stems from that crucifixion story - that's where someone got the idea to blame Jews for being a persecuted minority in western Europe. The entire history of western Christianity is entirely wrapped up in anti-semitism.

What they failed to understand was that, if anyone was the crowd, all were that crowd. Even Peter denied Jesus in the crucifixion story but Rome thought he was worthy enough to claim him as the founder of the Christian church.

If you read down to the bottom of my post that I linked to here, you'll note that blood libel was taught to German children as a way to justify persecution of the Jews and Hitler refers to the medieval persecution of Jews as the way Europe "should be" when he addressed a council of Bishops.

So, yes, the term "blood libel" is a term that is steeped in hatred that continues in white supremacist groups today in the U.S., like Storm Front, which attended tea party rallies in hopes of raising recruits.

Palin's choice of words demonstrates her total insensitivity - and delusion regarding public perception of her position in this nation. SHE is identified with white hate groups, NOT the woman who was shot. Palin is identified with these groups because they have aligned themselves with the tea party as much as possible because it is the ONLY political group in the U.S. that would give them the time of day - and the reason for that is the tea baggers are full of racists who hate Latinos and African-Americans - and especially the African-American that is currently president - tho, to tell the truth, any African-American would be hated by them because of their racist mindset.

For Palin to speak the words, iow, is a defacto call out to racists because they are the core of her constituency.

128. How can it be a call to both Jews and Antisemites?
First, I appreciate you taking the time to reply to me.

Since 'Blood Libel' refers to the libeling (false accusation)of Jews by Christians, I have to conclude that the term is one that many Anti-Semites reject.

Sarah Palin comparing herself to persecuted Jews can't sit too well with Anti-Semites, can it?

Not that these folks are usually too brilliant...

Jews don't seem to think she's gone through anything like what their people have known, either. Jews don't seem to like to have their plight co-opted.

So, I think her choice of words (not her choice, but David Frum or whoever her writer is) was extremely risky and bound to anger some of her base. The whole thing confuses me a little, because r'pubelickin's are usually very crafty with their hatred. This is a blunder, or sabotage.

140. lol. I went back to read what I wrote - I was so outdone by her today
I made quite a few mistakes. my typing was faster than my brain, unfortunately.

what I elided was the fundamentalist appropriation of Jewish history to make themselves the "bearers of the true faith" among Christians now. Growing up in the south I heard explanations for why the fundie sect was the "one true faith" many times - combined with apocalyptic visions of the end of the world - this belief system states that Jews will finally see the truth and convert, en masse, during the "end times" - and those that don't will be slaughtered because, well, because they're still just regular old Jews, not "perfected" ones (a term Ann Coulter used that is from this same eschatology.)

There is no real logic behind fundie beliefs - you have to pick and choose which things are "fundamental" or literal. Fundies are a large portion of Palin's following - among those that I know of. In the south, these same fundies (in the mega churches that have come out for republicans and even sponsored events, etc.) are still heavily populated by racists. maybe it's the soft racism of assumption - but the reason the mega churches grew in the south was b/c they started private schools to allow whites to re-segregate themselves when desegregation was part of the changing culture.

Instapundit, aka prof. Glenn Reynolds, who used the phrase in the WSJ, and most likely was the source for Palin, lives in the south, btw.

Fundies don't see their appropriation as anti-semitic. They don't see their view that Jews will come to believe just as they do because god will kill them otherwise as insulting - because, to them, it's a wonderful divine truth.

So, those were the anti-semitic sorts of things I meant to get to but failed to do.

However, I think that, most of all, the point of this was to make Palin out to be the victim in this situation - an entirely inappropriate take on this moment. I think she would have been better off to keep quiet and, since I don't want what's best for her, politically... I just want her gone b/c I think she's so bad for this nation.

She made herself the victim by, again, doing what fundies do - appropriating Jewish suffering and claiming it as their own - entirely ignoring how offensive this might be. Her choice of words, iow, reflects a deep cultural insensitivity among a group of people whose leaders do not have to be vetted by scholars - in Palin's church (Assembly of God) they also believe in speaking in tongues and literally demon possession and a host of other really weird things - things other fundie sects do not accept - anyway, in Palin's church, someone can obtain a license to be a minister via a mail order study. They don't have to know anything about the history of the creation of the Bible itself, the historical context for that creation - they are allowed to interpret it as they see fit, as long as it affirms them as god's new chosen. Or, in this case, allow them to claim victimhood and martyrdom.

98. That's an interesting interpretation. It makes sense to me.
I've been trying to figure out why in the world she would use "blood libel." She's not speaking off the cuff...this was a carefully crafted statement and, as a writer, I know that you don't just toss off something like this without weighing the overarching meaning of the words you've chosen.

"Blood libel" is a really loaded term (so to speak) and it's not a familiar figure of speech that is commonly used these days (I rarely hear it in conversation or see it in stuff I read, anyway).

I think you may be on to something.

(PS: it's "pogrom" not "progrom"...sorry, it's the editor in me).

155. 'Blood Libel' and Sarah Palin: Christian Conservatives' Infatuation with Judaism
]http://www.politicsdaily.com/2011/01/12/sarah-palin-and-christian-conservatives-love-judaism-but-is-tha/

That model of persecution is appealing for many contemporary conservatives in that it reinforces their self-image as the underdog in America's political wars and as the victims of an overbearing secular and liberal culture. In fact, the popular conservative blogger and professor Glenn Reynolds used the "blood libel" analogy in a Wall Street Journal article on Monday from which Palin may have drawn inspiration.

Much the same dynamic has also been at work with the rising use of Nazi metaphors by the right, notably since the 2008 campaign and the election of Barack Obama. In that view, Obama is Hitler, Democrats and liberals are "fascists," and any disagreeable new policy or op-ed column augurs a coming "Holocaust" or pogrom.

snip

Conservative believers in particular have gone from rejecting all things Jewish to celebrating "Christianized" Passover seder meals or wearing tallit, the traditional Jewish prayer shawl. There are Christian bar mitzvahs, and there is even a growing trend toward appropriating Yom Kippur, the most sacred day on the Jewish calendar, for a Christian day of atonement. And Sarah Palin and other evangelical women increasingly like to compare themselves to Queen Esther, the Jewish beauty from the Book of Esther who saves her people from destruction.

At the same time, Jews have also watched as Christian conservatives, such as Texas pastor John Hagee, have become Israel's greatest supporters. That backing -- financial as well as spiritual -- is often born out of a belief that Israel's refounding is a sign of the imminent Second Coming of Jesus in an apocalypse that will center on Jerusalem and will convert some Jews to Christianity while eliminating the rest.

161. Agreed, this term was not used accidentally, however I believe
that this term (which I had never heard before this week, and had to go on Wiki to learn - and ICK) was chosen for MORE than to paint the Hate Wingers as the victims in this affair.

These people speak in CODE; this way they can hide their most offensive messages from the blogosphere because we don't understand that code. We on the Left also have a hard time believing that their level of pure, unadulterated evil can still exist in the world. I'm here to say, BELIEVE IT.

IMHO Sarah and the Hate Wingers are happy as pigs in shit that their assassination by proxy worked so well. 4 Arizona politicians have quit because they are afraid for their lives. Now we progressives have no more doubts that we will be killed by proxy by the Hate Wingers, we KNOW that we can and will be shot in the head for attempting to have a say in how our society works, and by thinking that we too can participate in a democratic system of government.

So, not one to waste time, SP in her role as mouthpiece of the new American SS has upped the ante big-time. No one can convince me that it is a coincidence that Gabby is Jewish, and that another one of the victims of this massacre was Jewish, and right away this term "Blood Libel" gets thrown into the public sphere. She is using this sick term "Blood Libel" to paint herself as a victim, no argument there; but she is ALSO specifically, but IN CODE, speaking to her true believers, that the Jew-Killing has begun in the USA, and this was planned and deliberate, and they are happy about it. Is not one of their principal tenets to implement a CHRISTIAN society, oh, excuse me "restore" the Christian society which was "so brutally robbed from them" by us ungodly left wing America haters? :sarcasm:

Go ahead and explain to me now, how things can't possibly be this bad in the good ol' USA. Please. Convince me, I'm begging you.

She took THREE DAYS to come up with her idiotic "speech." Every word of that self-pitying, self-serving diatribe was carefully thought out (uh, not by HER, of course. The words "carefully thought out" NEVER applies to Sarah Palin). But she knew exactly that the words Blood Libel would cause a stir - outrage from the left and blind loyalty from the right. All she cares about is further dividing the country. She DOESN'T want an end to the violent rhetoric, it's all that keeps her blood-thirsty base quenched.

183. I just listened to part of it. He explained stochastic terrorism,
and then he took aim at the incessant false equivalency: "Show me the lone wolves who have been activated by the Left."

180. Deconstructing Sarah
(or Beck, Coulter, Limbaugh and the others) will only lead down a dead end rabbit hole and a tea party appointment with the Mad Hatter. Palin is liberal bait, her financial backers use her craziness to keep our eyes off the ball--which is what they are really up to.

Whoever funds Sarah Palin has to be put on the front page as being responsible, the puppet masters have to be exposed, they cannot be let off the hook. She would be a complete unknown without financial backing, and as long as she is on the front page somewhere, there is $$$$ behind it. Where does she get her talking points? I don't think she is bright enough to come up with this crap.

I am no way up to the usual caliber of research artists on DU, but offer these articles I initially found.
