An Arizona Republican Party District Chairman resigned shortly after the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) and 18 others on Saturday. According to The Arizona Republic, Anthony Miller had been subject to verbal attacks and internet postings by apparent Tea Party members, and said he feared for his safety.

"I wasn't going to resign but decided to quit after what happened Saturday," Miller told the Republic. "I love the Republican Party but I don't want to take a bullet for anyone."

Miller, 43, had recently been re-elected for a second one-year term as Chairman of the Legislative District 20 Republicans. He was the first African-American to hold the position. According to the Republic, Miller worked for Sen. John McCain's re-election campaign last year, and came under pressure from conservatives who supported McCain's Tea Party-backe

1. Actually, 4 AZ republicans resigned because of the shooting and the tea party.
Miller was just one of the four.

2. I'd quit too if I were him
"He was the first African-American to hold the position."

"I love the Republican Party but I don't want to take a bullet for anyone."

Why do you want to affiliate with a party where untold numbers of people want you marginalized at best and DEAD at worst?

3. They've seen teh crazy in their own party. Look how far right McCain had to go
this past election, just to hold on to his seat--right AFTER he was their candidate for Pres.

4. does this support our claim that the shooting was motivated by Sarah and friends?

It looks that way to me but I am bias.

7. Now I'm all confused
Because I thought the assassination attempt on the Democratic congresswoman was an ultra-sneaky attempt by the Democrats to do something, and Republicans didn't have anything to do with it. Now, a Republican party official is resigning because of fears of what those famously independent Tea Baggers might do?

Message discipline seems to be breaking down for the Republicans as they scurry away from their creation. The larger message for the Tea Baggers (which I have no doubt they'll grok) is that terrorism works. Now they can install their own persons to replace the people who resigned. The means may be distasteful, even horrid, but the ends? Sweet as honey!

8. I don't think he has anything to worry about.
He doesn't have crosshairs on him and I'm sure that virtually nobody recognizes his face as a representative of government.

13. Sounds like a coward, fleeing the building that he helped set ablaze.
Fine then, run away and leave it to us (yet again) to clean up your mess.
