Irene pics...
Edited on Mon Aug-29-11 10:57 AM by tk2kewl
We were under a mandatory evac order, but given the alternative to move upland to my SIL's house build in the 50s and surrounded by trees, or staying in my house built to the most stringent hurricane codes in an area with few trees, I decided my family would be safer staying put. As it turned out we never lost power when many of those further inland did. We had some pretty high water; probably 6 feet above mean high water. It messed up some of my neighbors older homes, but I simply pumped 1 1/2 inches of water out of my crawl space and that was it.

Before (boats secured against wind and surge)...

Water creeping up...

Ernie surveys the submerged neighborhood...

Come on in the waters fine...

Water entering neighbors den...

The street is also under water...

3. Thanks... we've had it worse during nor'easters
Water was high with Irene but I have lost shingles to nor'easters and lost none to Irene.

4. I would much rather replace shingles
Than pay for water damage.

11. I agree...
but fortunately, due to good government regulations in the form of building codes, I didn't have any water damage? :)

14. Happy to hear you were spared water damage.
During Hurricane Charley water damage cost me more than replacing my roof.

15. Storm Surge will need to hit about 9 feet before I have any water damage to speak of.
Glad it didn't, but surprised it got as high as 6.

5. Yea, Nor'easters are nasty.
Connecticut shoreline is a mess because of the flooding from Irene. A lot of the pics from here look like your pics.

What red-blooded American dog could resist? I'm glad you're safe, though noone wants to see that kind of damage.

19. besides
Ernie appears to be a Yellow Labrador and water is their natural element. I'm surprised the breed doesn't come with gills.

13. Surge was more than I expected
I had been watching the NHC storm surge probability models and it looked like a 6 foot surge was unlikely (< 20%). The last foot of water rose in only about 20 minutes.

17. A foot in 20 minutes?
That must've been terrifying. You are so lucky it didn't flood your home.

12. At least people there knew enough to let the mooring lines out
There were million dollar yacht owners on Cape Cod who just couldn't be arsed to do that and the million dollar yachts ended up as million dollar kindling and the owners got sued for damage to piers and bridges in the marina.

Those are some pretty impressive pictures and a cautionary tale for other boat owners.

My dad is on the big canal in Brightwaters and did fine with a very old house... your friends in Islip probably did ok.

33. Okay, thank you. It definitely looked familiar
and I do know the area where you are but haven't been there in ages. I am glad to hear the damage where my friends are was not too great. I have had problems getting in touch with several of my friends on LI. They're probably just busy putting everything back in place that they had put away before the storm. No news is good news I guess.

Great photos btw, and the puppy is adorable, especially the one of him surveying the scene!

25. Very impressive pictures. I hope the flooding goes down soon
so that you can rebuild.

I smiled at the pictures of the dog. It' so cool how dogs can look cute or funny in any circumstances.

If any power lines are down in the water, stay out of the water, if you can.

35. Good news!
Still losing the veggie garden is bad enough. (We lost on to Tropical Storm Faye in 2008) Got some awesome tomatoes out of it before it drowned, though.

(and your dog is still the cutest thing ever... next to my dog, of course)
