Tucson Tea Party Leader Says Threats Are Keeping Him Away From Obama Rally
Edited on Wed Jan-12-11 02:08 PM by RamboLiberal
TUCSON, AZ -- Trent Humphries, the leader of the largest tea party group in this mourning southern Arizona city, has nothing but praise for the way President Obama has led the nation through the aftermath of Saturday's mass shooting at a constituent event for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ). But Humphries won't be there tonight when Obama speaks at a memorial rally intended to unify Tucson after six people were killed in the tragedy.

Humphries says he's been getting threats at his home from people who seem to hold him and his organization partially responsible for the shootings Saturday.

Humphries told TPM he thinks Obama's visit will help put an an end to the political debates and let Tucson refocus on healing after the deaths of six of its citizens. Humphries told TPM he's called the Sheriff's department more than once in the past few days to make them aware of threatening phone calls.

"We got a not-so-veiled threat," Humprhies told me. "The Sheriff's deputies told me to stay away from public places."

-----

"It was something like 'we hate you and we're going to stand against you and we're going to use our First and Second Amendment rights to stop you,'" Humphries told me.

the Tea Party would talk any way it wants and screw anyone that doesn't like it? Poor baby, that having to lie in the bed you made sucks don't it. Hell if their rhetoric was like some of the other tea party rhetoric the Secret Service are probably happier if they stay away.

6. Are there public officials making these threats publicly??? Then it's not the same thing.
Random threats are not the same as a public offical publically putting out a hit on someone.

They know the tea party will embarrass them, and they don't want more bad press right now.

It is a poor choice of words..."memorial gathering" would have been a much better choice of words.

14. he should not have sown what he did not want to reap
I hope and pray that his opponents stop these threats - they do no good. They make those who use them just as lowdown as this man.

However, I really wonder what the tea baggers thought they were doing with their inflammatory rhetoric - with Limbaugh and Palin continuing this same rhetoric - what did they think would be the outcome?

Why did they do this if they didn't expect they would reap the same sort of hatred they have sown?

15. When I'm threatened, I'm careful to note what is said and not said
I don't think I'd say "It was something like . . ." I'd be able to cite it verbatim for the convenience of the proper authorities. Mr. Humphries doesn't sound like a very credible reporter. Did the alleged threatener actually say "we hate you" or was that a conclusion Mr. Humphries drew all on his own? The phrase "we're going to stand against you" isn't really a threat, but rather a statement of principled disagreement, which is probably what has Mr. Humphries all confused, apparently being unfamiliar with principles. I'm also not sure there's any "threat" involved in invoking the First Amendment, and I've been reliably assured by the public figure who first invoked "Second Amendment remedies" that there's no threat involved there.

Mr. Humphries sounds like kind of a whiny crybaby to me, and no, that's not a threat either, Mr. Humphries.
