26. I looked and didn't see an option to hide the Guns forum.
Edited on Thu Sep-01-11 10:27 AM by Jamastiene
The way I hid GD: P was by clicking on Options at the top of the page. The icon looks like this
That is the same icon they use for users' profiles too. So, remember the icon I'm talking about is at the top of the page, not that one.

then going to Edit Your Preferences. It is on the left hand side of the page you go to when you click Options. The icon for it looks like this:

There just happens to be an option there to hide GD: P from the latest page. You can also hide State forums. I don't hide those, but someone who wanted to, could. I wish there was an option for us to hide other forums too, but those are the only ones I saw there.

12. Hmm, and I've always considered hide and ignore features just a form of
putting my head in the sand and only allowing myself to be aware of essentially my own perspective.

But I really like the rec/unrec which some people really hate, so I guess to each his own. Carry on!

29. Some members post one-liner retorts only.
Others simply "Recced". or "Unrecced". Putting them on ignore isn't putting your head in the sand; it's managing your communications well. Let in posts that are logically opposed to your points. Keep out the kiddie snarking that passes sometimes as wittiness.

70. Sometimes it's for your own good.
I only very rarely put someone on ignore. My rule is, if someone is irritating and I don't trust myself to leave them alone, they must go on ignore. It prevents me from getting into stupid arguments and/or getting my posts deleted.

79. I filter spam on my email. I'm not seeing much of a difference.
Most of the people I've put on ignore were subsequently banned. The rest tend to repeat the same tiresome screeds over and over. They're not listening to themselves, much less anyone else, so continuing to read them is a waste of time.

32. I imagine that quite often...
I imagine that quite often, the ignore function is used not to block a different opinion, but rather to block the inane, the banal, the immature, or the rude.

I'd hazard that all things being equal, a college professor would choose to ignore a fifth grader arguing against basic math concepts not because the fifth grader disagreed with the professor's opinion, but because engaging in that particular conversation would be nothing more than a waste of time.

Seems to me somewhat myopic to attribute one and only one reason to a thing when so many more possibilities exist.

It's the vicious haters whose vile comments should be ignored. An additional benefit: the more that certain posters are put on "ignore", the fewer follow-up comments cluttering the thread.

Unsupported, Obama-hating assertions go on ignore immediately. Life is too short....

47. That's not why
In a forum as large as this, there are guaranteed to be personality clashes, even amongst people who are (theoretically) in agreement. There's a couple of posters who manage to push my "irritated" button and rile me, even when I try to hold myself to a higher standard. It's easier to ignore them than to let myself get riled.

Likewise with certain topics. If you know you're going to get heated up, spare yourself and your fellow DUers.

I also hide threads with spelling and grammar errors in the subject line. If the poster can't be bothered to use spell check, I'm not sure I want to hear what they have to say.

77. I don't use it. But don't think I'm superior because of it.
what category are you going to degrade and hide me in?

78. I don't like those, since I just see "ignored" and wonder what is there
I also think it skews one's perspective to ignore those one does not agree with. For instance people who filter out Republicans fail to realize how many of them there are and start thinking we can afford to fight among ourselves rather than fight them.

84. You can click on Printer-friendly format if you absolutely, positively must see an ignored post.

It's the only way I can deal here without losing my marbles. I highly recommend it.

86. How true!
If I would not invite certain people into my house or into my business, why should I invite them into my brain.

In addition, people who cannot take the time to compose a sentence without using "Fuck" deserve to go right to ignore.
