3. And then there are
some keyboard warriors whining about the inconvenience of being without ectric service for a few days.

They apparently are ignorant of just how fortunate they are.

6. BTW I think The Weather Channel did an extraordinary
job of keeping people informed of what was coming, of changes, of emergency measures in each State. Bravo to them! They probably saved more than a few lives. And still, 38 dead. :(

8. 44 deaths as of this morning
Ask the people who have lost everything and though not nearly as important, those who had to toss everything in their fridge and freezer who still don't have power (if it were my freezer it would add up to about $200 which I cannot spare). I don't think anyone who lives in the northeast could consider it overhyped.

9. USA Mainland top 50 deadliest Atlantic hurricanes 1851-2006
Edited on Thu Sep-01-11 08:18 PM by malletgirl02
According to this link Irene will be around number 40 on the list on the top 50 hurricanes to hit the mainland Atlantic coast of the US. Note this list leaves off hurricanes that made landfall off the mainland and that were not on the coast of the Atlantic. There is a separate list for those under the main list. I apologize this list is only from 1851 to 2006.

http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/tcfaq/E12.html

Please note one of the storms, number 38 was tropical storm Allison. Do not scoff at a tropical storm. Even a tropical storm can be deadly, hell regular storms can be too. Please take all storms seriously.

15. Don't know why this point is hard to see
But the coverage might have led one to believe something like 1800 deaths more likely. No one is minimizing the deaths. TS Arlene caused 25 deaths and it didn't even register on DU.

I think the point was that the news got people thinking it would be so bad that NY would be flooded, it would be on the order of Katrina, like that.

16. Exactly...nobody said this storm wouldn't have a body count, but..
...plenty of people said this storm would have an astronomical body count. That's the point.
