Saugus River pipe span damaged by Irene

A giant, long-abandoned steam pipe bridge spanning the Saugus River "is at risk of collapsing," according to a United States Coast Guard warning sent to local mariners following Sunday's hurricane.

"We're waiting for word from General Electric to know what is going on," he said.

Horgan said the tilting metal structure has been a topic of conversation at his Saugus River repair shop and among boaters and lobster boat owners along the river. He wants the span repaired or torn down as soon as possible but he does not want construction to interfere with the Labor Day boating weekend.

Horgan estimates more than 50 boaters pass under the steam pipes as well as Route 107, the commuter rail tracks and the General Edwards Bridge on good weather days as they move down the river to the harbor and ocean.
