City officials are still trying to figure out what happened and how to fix it, but they are already sure that repairing the damage will cost at least $2 million.

When the pavement gave way Sunday, it left a gaping span crossed only by a 16-inch water pipe that somehow managed to hold. Blumenthal called it a miracle that the pipe held.

Water department personnel managed to cut off the flow to the pipe after they became aware of the road collapse during Tropical Storm Irene, Longo said.
Now the department is spending about $250,000 to install a temporary pipe.
