Republicans plan to privatize teaching

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 09.01.11 | 12:05 pm

Senate Republicans are reportedly preparing legislation that would allow schools to privatize instructional services.

The Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals reports that Senate Education Committee chair Phil Pavlov (R-St. Clair) is preparing an education reform package that would allow school districts to hire teachers through a private company and avoid expenses associated with union jobs.

-snip-

The privatization piece would require teachers from a private firm to have all of the same qualifications as current instructors. The difference would be that school districts could take bids for instructional services once an existing contract expires.

The Michigan Education Association says the planned legislation will allow for-profit businesses to take over the state’s public schools.

3. and wherever they privatize, what was 'privatized' is destroyed
The only way you'll be able to get a decent education in a few years will be to go to a private school. Public 'privatized' schools will be crap, and it's all by design. :argh:

2. Nothing that has been privatized has ever ended up being cheaper

All it is is union busting. I can't imagine anyone sitting in a classroom for 8 or 9 hours a day for minimum wage. I just can't.

They truly believe they're going to hijack our country. It's time to stop indulging these idiots.

7. For profit Charter Schools
There was one on LI years ago which was shut down. The "teachers" didn't have college degrees. The TA's didn't have HS diplomas. They contracted out for the cheapest food service and janitorial services. Surprise? The school FAILED. Not only that, there were roaches and rats all over. The Board of Health came in and condemned it just for sanitary conditions. But, but, but they were making PROFITS! That is what "privatization" gets you. Let it be a lesson.

8. Isn't this EXACTLY what they are saying is unconstitutional about the Health Care Law?
Going to school is mandated by the government, and the money from that mandate is going into Private hands.. Mandated Health Insurance into Private hands... Explain the difference to me...

9. You mean they are going to hire scabs.
Great. Most principals work as teachers first. I wonder what they will think of this.

11. When the public school in my southern community
was finally integrated, some whites set up a private school. A neighbor taught in that school for 40 years and retired recently. She is living on Social Security only because the private school had NO pension plan.
