3. Thats a false history
Edited on Wed Jan-12-11 07:21 PM by Drale
the truth is that in almost ever town in the "west", it was illegal to carry a gun. You had to turn in your "iron" when you entered the town. In fact that is why the gunfight at the OK corral took place. Most people did still carry guns but they where small pocket sized guns, but people didn't go out in the street at high noon and have a gun fight, it just didn't happen.

EDIT: In that sense they actually had stricter gun control than we do now.

9. For NON RESIDENTS. Just wonder if you forgot that or didn't know the entire history?
Edited on Wed Jan-12-11 07:48 PM by Statistical
Many towns banned non-residents from having guns in the town. The reason. Cowboys generally weren't the best "citizens". They were migrant without any "roots". They had no loyalty to the town, often didn't know the townsfolks. They were just passing through. A couple weeks to months out driving cattle, they come into town with some coin in their pocket. Likely they are getting drunk, gambling, and whoring. They tended to get into fights, boasting and brawling. That tended to not mix well with firearms.

Some sheriffs made them check their guns when they came into town. If they wanted the booze, cards, and whores they needed to check their guns. Given the alternative they accepted (for the most part). None of this affected residents of the town.

10. I was not aware
but I'm pretty sure you still could not openly carry a gun on your hip. I am 98% sure about that bit.

11. Ironically what you couldn't do was conceal it.
Edited on Wed Jan-12-11 07:49 PM by Statistical
Virginia for example prohibited concealing weapons as far back of 1782, it became a felony in 1806 but it has always been legal to openly carry a pistol. By always I mean always since before the Nation was formed.

Now it fell out of favor and for a time even many Police Dept were unaware of the law but openly carrying in VA has never been illegal. For most of the history of this country concealed carry WAS illegal. Why should someone hide a firearm? Unless they intend ill intent. As gun carrying became rare (but still technically legal) in the 1960s ordinances were passed to allow conceal carry. It isn't very common but it is legal.

5. I know- Ironic that it was the first priority of the newly seated Republican
majority.

And that it happened last week.

It was one of the first things I thought of when I heard about the Arizona shootings.
