So this conservative newsletter stole my email from voter reg...
...is this really legal?

Jackasses at the Conservative Action Network Alerts signed me up to receive their propaganda. Apparently, they got my email addy from "voter reg files." This seems hardly ethical and I hoped it was illegal (which it apparently is not). I'm in a pissing match with them, insisting that they remove me. I know I can do it myself, but since I didn't add myself to this list, I'm not willing to remove myself either.

Please use their contact information with the same ethical considerations and respect that they have afforded me.

1. Report them to Spamcop
Edited on Fri Sep-02-11 08:31 PM by Pab Sungenis
http://www.spamcop.net -- that will hopefully get them added to some blacklists for spammers, and let their hosting provider know what they're doing.

Then sue them. Here's the information you'll need to go after them:

Owner:

Diener Consultants, Inc.
17388 Nature Walk Trail, #301
CO, CO 80134
US

Administrative Contact:
Schwartz, Mark mark@dienerconsultants.com
17388 Nature Walk Trail, #301
CO, CO 80134
US
+1.5612908090

Read everything here: http://www.angryox.com/vaspam/ and go at them.

And report them to their registrar as a spammer: http://tucowsdomains.com

7. Thanks - I sent to spamcop
This is great info. I'm not sure what they are doing is illegal, but it certainly is unethical. I'll check out your links.

2. You could always screw with them.
Sign them up for Russian brides, or penile enhancement products.

Gee, you have to give 'em an EMAIL address when you register to vote? Who knew?

4. Voter registrations are public records...
we get the lists to get the latest Democratic voters for canvassing, fundraising, petitions, etc. The Republicans, Greens, Conservatives, and Working Families people get the same lists, and do whatever they do.

In fact, I just got around to filing away two EDs worth I used for a petition drive last month. 2,000 names, addresses and phone numbers. I think some had email addys, but I'd have to dig them out and check. And no, I don't spam those lists.

Who knows why these assholes put you on their mailing list, but just go to the "remove" place in the email, or filter them into the trash bin. It's no big deal, really.

(you didn't accidentally register as a Conservative or Right-to-Lifer, did you? happens all the time and people forget until shit like this happens)

8. But just because it's public records
does not opt you in for marketing E-mails.

5. a few months ago I somehow got on AFAs e mail list.
whenever I got a message from them I immediately replied telling them how they were full of shit, using whatever profanity and scatological imagery that seemed appropriate. After several instances of this I was removed from their mailing list.

10. It looks like I may have been removed....
Just after posting this I started matching their emails with replies sent to their contact address at about 5 or 10 to 1 (depending on my mood). I also copied the domain owner on every email - calling him out directly (and showing him all of the courtesy (or lack thereof) that conservative action alerts had offered to me).

Normally I would have received several email from them by now - but all is quiet and my email inbox remains unpolluted.

Sheesh.
