3 escaped Hearst Ranch zebras shot to death
3 escaped Hearst Ranch zebras shot to death
Wednesday, January 12, 2011

(01-12) 10:46 PST CAMBRIA, Calif. (AP) --

Hearst Ranch Zebra's along Highway 1

Three zebras that escaped from the Hearst Ranch were shot to death by neighboring ranchers who claim the exotic animals were threatening their horses and cattle.

Green Valley Cattle Co. owner David Fiscalini said he shot two of the zebras last week because they were chasing seven horses on his property along Highway 46 about 10 miles from the Hearst Ranch. The third zebra was shot by a neighbor after it got into a herd of cows.

After shooting the animals, Fiscalini took them to a taxidermist to have their hides tanned, he told the San Luis Obispo Tribune. He didn't want to waste the hides, he said.

William Randolph Hearst's great-grandson, Steve Hearst, said the ranchers should have called the Hearst Ranch to report the runaway zebras.

"Neighbors are usually there to help their neighbors, not shoot their zebras," Hearst said. "It's a shame they took that action."

1. I wonder if a zebra had ever been shot in California previously
I don't believe there is a regular season for them.

14. Actually, zebras are pretty aggressive. That's why they are not
tamed and ridden as horses are--they are too dangerous.

That said, however, I suspect the other rancher just wanted to shoot them and have their heads to display.

4. pshaw. If you own a gun, and don't use it,
it goes stale. This was no more than simple bullet point management.

5. Sick. They weren't afraid for their livestock. They wanted a hunt.
I live across from cows. I call the police when they occasionally get out of their fence and onto the road. I don't shoot them because they might come near my property.

8. The Hearst Ranch is a state park.
I think those ranchers are going to regret what they did legally. I live a few miles down the road from the Hearst Ranch. It will be interesting to see what the state and the Hearsts do to bring them to justice.

19. I was thinking that too
I know there's many pricks out there. But, most farmers I have met wouldn't waste their time killing something unless it was a real threat.

23. I don't think the state owns those.
Hearst Ranch is - so far as I remember - and actual working ranch. Could be wrong.
