Mary Matalin Praises Glenn Beck Says He's the 'Furthest Thing From a Racist

While discussing the recent dust up over Rep. Andre Carson's remarks that "Some of them in Congress right now with this tea party movement would love to see you and me -- hanging on a tree" and Rep. Allen West's threat to quit the Congressional Black Caucus if they did not condemn Rep. Carson's remarks, CNN's Wolf Blitzer asks Mary Matalin to weigh in. What we heard next was some full blown wingnut praise of Glenn Beck and his revisionist history of the black Founding Fathers.

MATALIN: Well, it's not representative of great American black leaders. You know, Glenn Beck did an astounding, remarkable series on the civil rights struggle in this country, including black Founding Fathers. And that Congressman, and Maxine Waters who said all the "tea party" can go straight to hell, they're not in that great tradition. And they should be condemned. And a huge attraction, a significant attraction, and this is quantified in the polls, to Barack Obama, among white people was his promise to be post-racial. This is retro-racial and not only should

5. Maybe Beck is counting some of the Founding Fathers slaves?
Who knows, maybe one of the delegate's slave did something that Beck, in his twisted revisionism, construed as making him a 'Founding Father'

6. It certainly would be nice if there were black founding fathers, but the
ONLY named black I ever heard of in the Revolution was Crispus Attucks - and he died 3 years before the revolution began.

I think that to the wingnuts "founding fathers" means anybody who was alive during the Revolution - that's how they could call John Quicy Adams a 'founding father', even though he was still in short pants at the time of the nation's founding.

While there certainly were blacks who fought in the Revolution, they were foot soldiers, they were sailors, they were not the leaders. And they were all from the northern colonies - the south did NOT put guns in the hands of slaves. It was a very, very bad idea. That's why there were so many recruited by the British to fight AGAINST the Americans - they were promised their freedom if they rebelled against their owners.

4. She's the "humanizer" for Dick Cheney--or at least, that's what she used to do.
I mean, come on--we know what she's made of; this isn't a surprise. It's yucky, but not surprising.

9. There were plenty of free blacks lving & working in the colonies....
Edited on Sat Sep-03-11 08:18 AM by Historic NY
but I can't recall any of them depicted in the paintings of the founding fathers.

He is talking about Nell/Stowes book from 1855 The colored Patriots of the American Revolution with sketches of several. I have a copy in my own library....Beck as usual misses the point of the book and its published timing on the American scene. Uncle Tom's Cabin, was the most widely read book by 1855 and Nells book highlights the contributions of ordinary black citizens. A lot of the sketchs appear to be gleaned from the various statements and papers surrounding documenting service for a Rev. War pensions.

I have a few local black citizens from the 18th century in my town the served in various military units. Their later contributions are recalled along side of others in the community.
