Katia and Lee - cause for worry
Lee is clearly a problem. Even if it came ashore in a near dead calm, the potential for 20 inches of rain in New Orleans is scary. Consider the impact of all that rain as it runs up the Appalachian spine of the east, and on up into the northeast, and you have a recipe for more disaster in a part of the country still not recovered from Irene.

Then there's Katia. They keep saying it is going to turn to the northeast, but so far, it seems to be a freight train on rails, headed for the Mid Atlantic coast. If no turn, this puppy will come ashore very near where Irene did.

Happy Labor Day, everyone. Take good care.

2. Lee is the bigger problem because it's going to wobble around

for a couple of days and dump maximum rainfall over NOLA before it heads north and does some good.

Katia is no longer forecast as taking a westward turn, something that would have been disastrous. Her present projected course leaves plenty of room for a slow turn out to sea, something I think we're all hoping for at this point.

3. Katia brushes Bermuda...
...and disappears from history.

This happens three or four times a season, typically. Sometimes they clip the southern third of Nova Scotia on the way out...

6. Lee is going to drench more than a few places
Water and possible tornadoes will be the worries here. Expect loss of power and no water as a result of this one.

10. Your mouth to god's ear, warpy! I am encouraged. I was down, preparing
for another go-round like Irene. We were without power for 4 days and many of my local stores were closed due to lack of power, such as Dunkin Donuts, the diner, dry cleaners plus my library. We had to throw out lots of food but will recoup the cost with our insurance. Since we have city gas and city water we thankfully had hot showers and our stove worked. No electric, landline or Internet of course, but my cell phone sufficed...

4. Lee is a slow moving rain dumper.
It's going to linger on the Gulf Coast for days and dump more rain here than Irene did in the northeast.

Too bad it didn't come ashore over Texas and wander out to Oklahoma.

9. Katia does look to be going on a straight line so far.
I guess they keep thinking it will turn otherwise somebody should start worrying.

11. Katia looks like it's already starting to make its turn
Edited on Sat Sep-03-11 10:27 AM by Hugabear
It's currently on a NW track, which is better than the more westerly track it was on yesterday. Most of the computer models are now in agreement with this thing not even menacing the US.

Lee, on the other hand, isn't going anywhere...

12. eh...
Unless you live outside the levee system (very, very few do -- mostly wealthy who can rent a hotel), or the levees break, New Orleans will be fine. The city can pump 13 in / day of rain out of the city.

Some other areas of LA will be hurt worse.

13. Lee is here alright.
Palm fronds clog gutters
While puppies run for shelter.
Waves fall from the skies.

18. It's here alright.
We've got the doors open to the porch watching the wind, waves, and torrential rains.

Entertaining for now, but this is going to go on all weekend. Lots of rain.

19. We j(the food bank) distributed truckloads of bottled water to CT towns
Even though half the week our main warehouse (in East Haven) was operating on emergency generators. When ONE of the freezers holds 3 tractor trailer truck loads of food, loss of power matters. We were just assessing the week late last night and we're not sure how quickly we can get more water in. Let's hope Katia goes away.
