CDC Statistics: Mental Illness in the US
By John M. Grohol, PsyD
Founder & Editor-in-Chief

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a summary report yesterday detailing how the CDC measures mental illness in the U.S., and summary statistics from those measurements. Most of the information summarized in the report is not new, since it was previously published. What the report does do is bring a great deal of this information together in a single paper.

The report notes that according to the World Health Organization, mental illness — that is, any mental disorder — accounts for more disability in developed countries than any other group of illnesses, including cancer and heart disease. Yet all we hear people talk about in the media time and time again is reducing your risk of these health problems. We rarely hear anyone talk about reducing your risk of anxiety or depression.

According to a rigorous health survey conducted by the CDC in 2004, an estimated 25 percent of adults in the U.S. reported having a mental illness in the previous year. Lifetime prevalence rates of mental illness in the U.S. were around 50 percent when measured back in 2004. That means in a family of four, one of you likely has a mental illness.

3. but their wokers get 6 weeks paid holiday and have a 32 hour week
plus the rich top out at paying 70% income tax and in the usa most workers think you would be lazy if you ONLY worked 32 hours a week and took vacation time much less 6 weeks and because so many americans know that they will be rich some day they dont like that the rich should pay taxes, in denmark it is very different.

4. Try suggesting a 32 hour workweek on this Democratic site once and see what happens

I tried it once here. Had posters responding like I was some sort of a extremist or something for even suggesting the idea.

Won't be trying that again.

And you want to know another little factoid? My union the UAW, who tended to set the pattern for pay, benefits and working conditions for all workers here in the US, was on the verge of achieving a 32 hour workweek about 30 years ago. Couldn't do it all at once because we couldn't hire and train enough new workers to do it immediately. First year every month we had one week with a 32 hour workweek and then we had hoped to expand that incrementally ever year until it was done. If we had done that rather than having a 9.1% unemployment rate right now we would be short of workers because with a 32 hour workweek we would need another 20% more workers to make up for that.

And you want to know what else began occurring during this time? Lot of Americans began boycotting the products my union made in favor of non-union or imported. So we had to give up the idea of a 32 hour workweek. Lot of those same American are crying now because they or their kids can't find any decent work and they are positive this can all be blamed on President Obama. They complain that their wages and benefits seem like they are patterned after non-union workers now. That is because they are.

That is what happened.
