Has anyone received a notice from their bank about ID Theft coverage? |
|
I got a letter the other day from someone called "Identity Secure" with a membership number telling me that my membership was going to be renewed automatically in a couple of weeks if I did not call and cancel. I had no idea who it was from? They said they would charge my card $139.99 if I did not cancel it. I had never heard of "Identity Secure"? I had no idea I was covered by such a program?
So I called the number on the letter and was on hold for about 45 minutes before I could talk with a representative. I asked him who he was working for? I had never heard of his company. He mentioned JP Morgan Chase. Their name was nowhere to be found on the letter, only "Identity Secure".
Finally, he said he would cancel the membership and gave me a cancellation number. I told him that I did not appreciate this type of business practice and that if this was not cleared up, I would contact the State Attorney General.
Has anyone else received such a notice??

2. Never got one of those and |
|
when I googled the name "Identity Secure" nothing came up.
Personally, I think you might want to report this to your state's AG. Maybe make a copy of the letter and write down what was said and send it off ASAP.

3. It sounds like a scam. Not sure you should've called that ph #. You should've shot off an email |
|
to attorney general, THEN call your credit card company to notify them of the threatening letter & tell them any charges from that company are NOT authorized.
BTW...unless the letter stated your credit card #, they probably didn't have it and wouldn't have been able to charge your card, anyway.
I get phone calls all the time from some unidentified company, telling me to press "1" or something to talk to a representative about something having to do with my bank account or credit card account...it says not to worry, I'm not in trouble, but that it's urgent...blah blah blah. I always just delete it.
My bank or credit card would always identify itself clearly, state why they are calling, and state that I can call them back at their regular phone number (in other words, I could call the ph # listed for that bank/credit card).

4. The company appears to be legit, and some banks offer their customers |

the chance to subscribe to it - but you have to do it; they can't sign you up for it without your permission. Sounds like you got signed up somehow without knowing about it. Either that or this is an outfit that is pretending to be the real one and it's a scam.

7. Definitely. Whether it's a legitmate company or not, you shouldn't be |
|
charged for a service you never signed up for.

5. I notice that you say it was from your "bank," but in your facts, you clearly state... |
|
that nowhere is your bank's name mentioned. So it wasn't from your bank, apparently.
If you get one of these in the future, and the letter says which of your credit cards it's going to charge, just notify your credit card that you have rec'd a scam letter and you expressly do not authorize any charges from that company. If the charges are charged, anyway, just protest them in the ordinary way charges are protested for your credit card.

8. Credit card company will most likely say they cannot "prevent" a charge |
|
but that you can dispute one after the fact. At least that is what I was told in a similar situation. fortunately, the "possible" charge was never placed on my card.
