1. Why did the Prez even invite them in the first place?
Is he bored, or is he some kind of closeted NASCAR fan?

7. Obama seems to enjoy courting the right
which is a fool's errand, at best.

12. Only people from the right like NASCAR?
I know that the right wing absolutely hates it when Obama has basketball players to the White House. They seem to think only blacks like basketball. And so they see him as "courting" blacks when he does so.

But you think Obama inviting the top NASCAR drivers to the WH is "courting the right".

If you don't see the irony in your position, you are not paying attention.

15. Trying everything possible to unite this nation.
because if we continue on this current path of divisiveness we are doomed.

3. Meh, I have a driving simulator that includes a NASCAR stock car...
Edited on Sat Sep-03-11 04:32 PM by Fumesucker
I can actually get the car around the oval without crashing if I'm all alone on the track but NASCAR also races a couple of road circuits.

I don't believe I've made it all the way around a road circuit in a stock car without crashing at least once, those beasts are really really touchy and hard to drive, you so much as breathe on the throttle and the car is sideways or worse.

ETA: FWIW, I'm definitely not a NASCAR fan..

17. Wow!!! That's so cool, you should become a NASCAR driver you ol' Fumesucker you...
...what bvar22 said:

My all time favorite quote is from Carl Edwards, one of the drivers who turned down the invitation.
Carl was in 2nd place behind Jimmie Johnson on the last turn at Kansas in Sept 2009, and made a successful Kamikaze Dive pass around Johnson for the lead, but slid up the track and hit the wall.
After the race Edwards said,
"I knew I was going to hit the wall,
but I didn't think it would slow me down so much.
It works in the Video Game."

11. Saying Ovals, doesn't work, does it?
I was trying to cut the NASCAR drivers who turned Obama down some slack.

Actually ... no, I was not.

The President of the US invites the top athletes from all major sports to the WH because the American people are huge sports fans.

Its just a nice thing for a President to do. It is usually something we can all agree to. A simple, positive event.

And I'd expect any athlete who turns that invitation down to have a really good reason, like "I have an MRI scheduled that day".

But I've yet to hear what "good reason" some of these NASCAR guys gave for turning down Obama's invitation.

Do they have one?

9. Thanks! Also the OP is misleading...
It seems to read that ALL NASCAR drivers would reject that visit... clearly 5 of 11 invited did (whatever the genuine reason for the excuses are I don't know).

14. Don't be silly...
I was remarking that for someone who hadn't heard the story, it is misleading. I wasn't insulting you. There is a difference.
