She knew how much I despised Bush and was sure I was elated. More like cautiously optimistic, but it was good hearing from her and we've since reconnected.

and when I went outside there was a double rainbow and I thought "It can only get better from here."
Also, as I was walking home all these fireworks were going off and I said to myself "Wow, the whole world is celebrating." Found out later it was Guy Fawkes night (whoops) but the impression stuck with me.

20. I remember the moment I knew when he won... |
|
the numbers weren't there yet. But it was clear.
I was in a hospital room visiting a critically ill teen. News was on - and my red state (east coast time) had already been called for Obama - the state hadn't gone blue in a presidential election in more than 40 years.
During that visit, learned of a very positive prognosis for the patient. The two events will be intertwined in my memory.

hubby screwed up the hand off of my grant park tickets, so i didn't get to go. by the time i got out of the transfer station he had been declared the winner. i drove through downtown, tho, and around the city. it was sorta surreal. smiling happy people taking over the downtown streets. i did get to go to the inauguration tho, because i was about as mad as i had ever been at dh. he knew it was the only way out.

|
all of us watching TV monitors. When the numbers rolled putting Obama over the top, the place erupted. Crying, laughing, cheering, dancing -- we spilled out into the street and cars were driving up and down the streets honking and waving. Still one of the best days of my life.

I was a poll watcher but due to the turnout at the precinct I was assigned to, I was sworn in as a Election Worker. It was a crazy long day. Afterward, went and hung out at the County Democratic party Headquarters to watch the returns. When he was announced as the winner, I began hugging and kissing people I didn't know, Black folks, White folks, Gay and Straight all of us delirious with what we had just accomplished. I remember driving home honking my horn through the downtown with many others doing the same. We rolled our windows down and spread the love. It was a night that I will never forget. Total hope for the future of our country.
