1. I have a girlfriend who did that, although she went to a clinic...
She got pregnant on the first try.

She was ready.

I think it's great for those who are truly prepared.

2. Misleading headline by the Times, big surprise
These stories are not about women who lie about using bc. It's about women who want children but not husbands. I know, I know, foolish me expecting evenhanded truth when there's an opportunity to demean women who don't act in accord with the Global Accords Governing Fair Use of Women. Thanks, The Sunday Times!

12. Exactly....
The man chose not to use birth control (i.e., condoms). This article really goes out of its way to portray the men as victims.

5. An interesting question for this board
and one which I have asked on this board in the past and received many flaming responses. If you have sex with a woman, then you should expect to become a father. If this is of a concern for you, then a simple operation can correct that problem. You can also take your own actions less dramatic to ensure that it will not happen. If you do become a father, then you have a financial and emotional obligation to that child. Like in this article if the situation involves a financially independent parent wanting to do this, then society really has no interest in the situation. When the situation involves parents not stepping up to the plate (not being financially ready as you state) to have children and the state is asked to step in, then that is another matter (note I recognize this story is about another country and does not discuss financially dependent parents). Some on the board then say why should only the well to do have children?

Humans are part of the natural world (animal kingdom). One successful evolutionary approach is brood parasitism (think Cuckoos). Getting others to expend their resources on passing on your genes. I am sorry, but I resent the hell out of fathers who do not take responsibility for their children. For those fathers who say they were deceived, all I have to say is tough - unless your sperm was stolen from a condom then by your sexual act you have accepted all consequences of that action. I might get some flames for that statement.

My next statement might even get more flames. If you are a woman, show some discernment in who you sleep with or at least who you sleep with without adequate protection. Can you ask a simple question, is this individual stable and willing to step up to the plate to support my child financially and emotionally?

Of course it has been a long time since I was 17, so maybe I am being a little strict. I have had my children. I have no intention of proposing making it harder for single mothers than it already is. I just think that maybe we have swung the social pendulum too far in the other direction. I just would like to see, when stories are ran in the paper about single parents (usually mothers) in which their children are supported by the state or are in trouble that a couple of questions get asked about the fathers.

Both men and women need to take precautions for unwanted pregnancies.

For women who do not want children, (or at least not now) take the best available birth control precautions and never rely on your partner's precautions alone... ie he claims to have had a vasectomy or uses a condom.

For men who do not want children (or at least not now) use the best birth control available to you regardless of what your partner claims to be using for bc.

It takes TWO people to procreate therefor stands to reason that both should take precautions. No form of birth control is 100%, but the chance of an unwanted pregnancy can be reduced even further if both partners use the best birth control methods available to them.

True, men (currently) have less bc options available. But perhaps it's time that everyone DEMAND better options for men. I have read from several credible scientific/medical sources that male bc pills are doable, but further research $$$ is difficult to obtain since the demand (so far) has not been there. Sadly, it seems Pharmaceutical companies are finding R&D for drugs such as Viagra a better investment. :eyes:

Oh, the irony. But if we can present proof of a viable market for male birth control, the $ WILL be there. And the best way to begin is to remove this culturally ingrained idea that only women are responsible for preventing unwanted pregnancies.

on edit: grammar

I'm in complete agreement. Right now we're in a bit of a mess, in part, because we have two generations out there with separation anxiety and poor skills for conflict resolution, directly as a result of divorce and single parenting.

7. That was the premise of "The World According To Garp" by John Irving.
Garp's mother wanted a child but without the burden of marriage in the Forties. She chose a soldier in her hospital who was badly wounded and terminal as her "sperm donor". Jennie Fields was unapologetic about her choice. And that's just the beginning of the book. It gets more interesting from there.

How fucking misleading can a headline be?
