As soon as I'm ready to throw in the towel, the SOB gives one of the most inspiring speeches EVER given by an elected American official.

Disappointed at some things? You bet. Wising things would have been done differently in some situations? Yep. But all in all, given what he was facing and what he had to deal with since taking office- all I can say is- WE ARE SO FORTUNATE to have the gift of this man as our President. No one could have done it better or accomplished more during this time.

Unfortunately, those speeches were just about the only good thing he ever GAVE those of us below the 90% tax bracket.
So now he tosses another good speech to us peons, and we'll all just forget that the last 2 years of POLICY have 'stayed the course' with no real change from B*sh beyond a verbally COHERENT figurehead?
He's the most DISAPPOINTING fellow I ever voted for.

There's WAY more to a Presidency than good speeches.
I guess it seems so impressive because the last occupant of the White House could barely read, much less string a coherent sentence together.
It is good, however, if he was able to provide some heaing tonight.

It's almost funny to see people turned around by a few more inspiring WORDS, which is all they'll be given.
Obama is a talented politician who makes some very good speeches. He's also willing to govern purely on the behalf of big business to rake in campaign cash, so long as voters will let him get away with it. And apparently, many will.

That is quite a bit of the job.
That's why 1,100 people work in the White House alone. The Top Guy is often the Used Car Salesman In Chief...while the staff polishes the hubcaps, etc.
Just saying, don't sneeze at it. One good speech can make mountains fly. Ask anyone who ever saw MLK speak.
It is what it is.

A President does not get what he wants simply by announcing it to the public. Congress people think of their constituents only; the President, the entire country.
The Senate is not set up to provide pure democracy, since each state has two no matter how few people they are; thus a Conn. Senator can override a majority made up of New Yorkers and Californians.
So the argument is not exactly equal on each side. The left seems to ignore the make up of the Senate, as if it will go away if the President just pounds the bully pulpit hard enough.

but I listened to this one because I knew there would be no mealymouthed promises, just the best of our President's oration, and he is one of the best orators in the world. I was lifted while listening and wasn't waiting for the usual stab in the back because there wasn't going to be one.
If this will somehow make him a better leader, wonderful, but I don't think it will. It gave comfort in a magnificent way and that is good. Come Monday, we're back in the cesspool that is DLC politics.

"like all Americans, kneels to pray with you today" Nope, I'm sorry Mr. President, all Americans don't pray and of those that do, not all kneel. Perhaps you could be a little more open to the non-Christians of the world.
"As Scripture tells us" So some of you are going to say that this is a eulogy and of course there is going to be some religious overtones. Sure. But there is WAY more than overtones here. And he is the President who represents ALL people of America (as he's doing in the speech so save me the "he's a Christian" crap because he's not speaking as a Christian, but as my President) and we get a pretty heavy dose of the religion.
"Scripture tells us that there is evil in the world" I will at least give him some credit for going to Old Testament for these two pieces of Scripture so at least it is somewhat relevant to the Jewish population. But, seriously, he tells us this like it is some kind of ultimate authority. Why not quote some Vonnegut because that dude has some pretty seriously deep messages about death that don't involve god.
"If there are rain puddles in heaven," I seriously wanted to barf when he said this.

He wasn't "DLC." :eyes:
He gave eloquent, emotion-touching speeches.
Somehow, I've never been moved by his speeches. His rotten center-right policies overpower his speaking talents for me.
I'm not inspired by words. I'm inspired by deeds.

How the tide will turn quickly on a guy who doesn't give a damn about the poor. He gives one good speech and now everyone loves him again.
I haven't forgotten about the last two years.

Speeches are seductive. People need to look at actions, not mere words.

We are talking about words here-- WORDS. To suddenly turn around and say, 'all that stuff he DID... I'll just put it aside. These free, inedible, unspendable WORDS have made up for it'... well, it's just kind of sad.

79. As WilliamPitt said, a Presidential speech IS considered action or have you forgotten |
|
the calls for using the "bully pulpit"?
The President just used the bully pulpit to decry negative and violent rhetoric. While he did it in a uniformly positive way and didnt call out specific people, what he was saying was clear.
You remember the calls for him to use the bully pulpit, right?

No one is saying he shouldn't have made this speech, or that speeches are meaningless.
That speech was not about moving legislation, or gaining votes, or putting pressure on Congress. It was feel good pablum-- expertly delivered, yes-- and the message is nice enough. But he was not arguing any controversial point or advancing any political goal, and so this really has nothing to do with the bully pulpit.

If Bush had given a speech like that, it would have carried him for a couple years but Democrats aren't like that.

82. Lets try this again for the critics who feel they have to post in this thread |
|
#1 - No one is saying one speech makes the entire world a perfect place. NO ONE. That is a straw man that you are creating. I'm still unhappy about still being in Afghanistan and a few other things. That does not take away from the fact that the speech was great and made people feel better about the tragedy and it ALSO indirectly criticized those who use hateful rhetoric. We all know who that is.\
#2 - No one is saying that Obama critics 'cannot offer their opinion'. But if you choose this thread to rehash the same talking points we have heard from you ad infinitum because you cannot handle other people being happy with Obama for even one moment or one thread, then you are being an asshole. Sorry mods if I am breaking the rules, it had to be said.

Yes, it's better to have a good speechmaster in chief during troubled times than a bumbling idiot. But, seriously, a GOOD SPEECH is what you're after? Unbelievable really. What ever happened to platforms and good ideas....

It was a great speech...he often gives great speeches. If his actions would reflect the ideals he expresses in his speeches he could become the greatest president the US has ever had....I wouldn't hold my breath.
Meanwhile... the US continues to engage in torture, rendition, the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women, and CHILDREN in the Middle East, while further eroding the civil rights of its people at home. The US continues to be the most unequal industrialized nation in the world with the greatest disparity of income while rewarding and enriching the banksters who got us in this mess and appointing an unapologetic corporatist as his Chief of Staff.....But all he needs is more time.

That's setting the bar a little low. We still are on track to lose the Senate in the 2012 elections.

But I also haven't forgotten why I would seriously consider throwing my support to a viable challenger if one came along.
The above sentence notwithstanding, the speech he gave last night was one of the best I've heard in my lifetime of 53 years.

based on one short speech. Didn't there used to be an English word 'fickle'? Maybe it got deep sixed.
