I put genealogy online for my county. Here are entries for the children of G.&M. Gilbertson..ossw is on same stone with:
-Annie C./Died Jan. 23, 1876 of Diptheria/AE 11 yrs. 11mo. & 10da., ossw: -Ida/Died Jan. 16, 1876 of Diptheria/AE 6 yrs., 7mo. 8days, ossw: -Dora/Died Jan. 13, 1876 of Diptheria/AE 16yrs. 1mo. 10da.ossw: -Mary/Died Jan. 13, 1876 of Diptheria/AE 18yrs. 2mo. 4da.
Most of the family gone in a few days time. Empty chairs at the dinner table.

...lost three older brothers in a matter of days to "Spanish flu," the great influenza outbreak of 1918. They were all in their teens.
As soon as flu vaccines became available, she started advocating for them. I guess there's nothing like the brutal experience of burying loved ones to make you grateful for vaccines.

and you'll find plenty of evidence for lives lost during the various epidemics that swept through those camps and towns. Scarlet Fever, Diptheria, Whooping Cough, Measals, etc. Lots and lots of kids, for the most part.
My great-aunt Dorothy is buried at North Bloomfield; she died of Scarlet Fever in the 1890's. She was 11 years old.
