Interesting - SF is letting people walk around butt naked
Message to nudists: At least be sanitary

Supervisor Scott Wiener will introduce legislation today intended to get to the bottom of the gross-out factor when it comes to public nudity.

His proposal would require people who bare all for all to see to at the very least place a towel or like item underneath them when they sit down. The proposed restrictions also would require nudists to cover up before they enter a restaurant.

Wiener represents the Castro District, where over the last year it has become increasingly common to see guys au natural (except, perhaps, for donning a pair of sneakers or flip-flops) walking down the street or gathering in the popular plaza at Market and 17th streets.

City officials have, for the most part, kept hands off the naked guys, not wanting to offend those who embrace an anything-goes culture of tolerance that has made San Francisco famous.

However, some nearby business owner and residents, including parents with young kids, have said enough is enough, and have called on officials to crack down on the nudists.

As opposed to Portland, where people genuinely don't give a shit. We had 10,000 nude folks on bicycles ride through the city in May, no one batted an eye.

39. That's how my Mom did it, way back in the 1950s when I was growing up.
Completely unflappable, she'd turn anything into a brief lesson, usually in tolerance. One of my favorite memories of my Mom was the time, when I was about six years old, that I brought this 12" long alligator lizard into the kitchen. A member of the skink family, they're around California and generally bite and hang on when handled. This one had a firm hold on my finger and wasn't about to let go. I displayed this situation to my mother, who was in the middle of cooking dinner. Her response?

"That's a very interesting lizard, Richard. When it lets go, turn it loose in the back yard and wash up for dinner."

Then, she turned back to her task.

Nothing surprised her. Nothing rattled her. She simply found a simple way to deal with anything that happened. That attitude was catching.

Edited on Tue Sep-06-11 03:06 PM by begin_within
who may or may not want to see a nude person - and you can't know ahead of time whether they want to or not - I'm in favor of enforcing nudity laws in public places. Except of course when the place is specifically designated as clothing-optional, such as a beach which has a sign indicating that. Or at a privately-run event such as the Folsom Street Fair or Burning Man or whatever. But not as an everyday thing anywhere you want. I think that forcing people to accept nudity in a location where it is not normally expected is a violation of their own rights. It's making the choice for them whether they want to see nudity or not. And nobody has that right. Even though I don't care myself whether a person goes nude in public, other people do care and will be offended, and we need to respect their rights. Making the choice for them as to whether they will or will not see nudity is a violation of their own right to choose what they see.

54. Really?
Try urinating in a public place and see what happens. If people don't have a right to choose what they don't want to see, there wouldn't be public indecency laws.

and it's not going to be all about public safety, either.

I don't even think you'd get away with pissing in your own pickle jar with a cap on it.

Even if people don't have a Constitutional right to choose what they do or don't want to see, there's always that silly little thing called consideration for the sensitivities of others within reason.

I'm not bothered by two guys holding hands in public. Actually, I'm less bothered by that than I am by seeing a heterosexual couple sucking face with their hands all over each other in public.

So yeah...people can pretty much do what they want in public as long as it's legal, but that doesn't always mean it's right and that they're not going to be viewed as gigantically selfish assholes for purposely offending others.

41. Technically it is.
California has a public indecency law that clearly bans any sort of outdoor public nudity anywhere in the state. San Francisco, which has a long tradition of allowing public nudity, has simply never enforced the law. Still, there is NOTHING stopping a CHP officer from citing or arresting someone in the city for walking down the sidewalk naked. It just doesn't happen because the CHP typically leaves enforcement of "social" laws to the local police departments (though, on rare occasions, CHP officers WILL sometimes cite people in SF for nudity if they're pulled over for a traffic stop and are found to be driving naked).

In practice, most police departments in California don't go out of their way to harass nudists unless there's an actual complaint. Aside from a handful of dark red counties, most police departments have better things to do. Even when there is a complaint, officers will typically warn first, rather than going straight to an arrest for indecent exposure ("Look, we've had a complaint. Cover up or we'll have to write you a ticket"). More often than not, they're more irritated at having to deal with a stupid call than at the actual nudity itself.

49. Even in areas where it's tolerated, it's still uncommon.
Most naturists rarely leave their own property without clothes on. I've been to a few beaches without clothes, and once spent a few days camping in the Emigrant Wilderness wearing nothing but boots and a backpack, but that's about it. Oh, and the Bay to Breakers...did that naked too :)

There are some people who walk around naked to make a political statement, but for most naturists it's just about comfort. Most naturists don't go nude in public places with a lot of people simply because it's uncomfortable to have everyone staring at you.

My favorite time was about a year ago while I walking up Castro behind two cops. As I passed a couple of homeless kids smoking weed on my right, to my left, a naked man in socks and sneakers casually walked by, holding his clothes in his arms. The cops didn't even blink an eye. And it wasn't even Halloween!

My favorite was the time I saw a really hairy guy--we're talking carpet back--who'd shaved his chest, back, and shoulders down to just above his nipples. I guess he wanted to look his best in a strapless gown. :-)

52. Honestly in America
The beaches are not what the shows present on tv, like Baywatch. Not one bit. Rather sit for hours at the local DMV, another place that seems to remind me of a leper colony. Not that I am all that and a bag of chips, and I for one always dress modest at the beach - never forgo a shirt and longer britches. I don't want to be "that guy" people get uneasy looking at.
