Nancy Pelosi was in the room when Gabrielle Giffords...

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, all close friends of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, were in the hospital room with the Arizona Democrat when she opened her eyes for the first time since she was shot in the head Saturday during a rampage that killed six in Tucson, Ariz.

In a speech at a University of Arizona service for the victims of the shootings, President Barack Obama broke the news that Giffords, who has been in critical condition since undergoing emergency brain surgery, opened her eyes.

1. Pelosi. Gillibrand. Wasserman Schultz. Those are some strong women
the kind you want at your side. That's awesome.

4. It could have been any one of them in that bed.
It must have been something, watching Gabby's eyes open.

One day I hope Gabby goes to them and says, "I had a dream. And you were there, and you were there, and you were there...."

3. That Giffords opened her eyes was reported on January 9th. I'm confuzled.
How can Obama break the news when the news was already broken?

http://sonoranchronicle.com/2011/01/09/giffords-survives-the-night-can-open-eyes/

"Giffords can open her eyes, but because she is on a ventilator she can’t speak, said Rhee."

6. I think that point was that there was recognition. Just because an injured persons eyes are open
doesn't mean that there is actual recognition and response.

7. I'm watching the video of that press conference by her surgeon
Edited on Wed Jan-12-11 09:59 PM by blogslut
He mentioned nothing about her opening her eyes. I think the report you cited was incorrect.

EDIT ADD: video link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnRaKugIZIQ

11. Well then the press is blatently making things up because that is not the only
paper that reported the same thing on January 9th.

http://www.tucsonsentinel.com/local/report/010911_giffords_condition

"Giffords is in a drug-induced coma in intensive care. Doctors frequently awaken her to check her responsiveness, and she could open her eyes and respond to simple commands Sunday - an encouraging sign, said Rhee said.

Despite Giffords' ability to follow commands, "We know that brain swelling can take a turn, so we remain cautiously optimistic,” said Lemole.

He described simple commands as: "can you open your eyes?" or "can you raise two fingers." Such simple tasks can tell doctors much about her condition, he said."

12. Okay
I'm really too exhausted to do further research on this and will take you at your word. Personally I think this subject feels kind of nit-picky.

15. I understand
We all have things that stick in our craw. I myself, been known to argue for the true facts of an issue even in the face of an overwhelming tide of "common knowledge". I am sorry I denigrated your concern.

16. Thank you, blogslut. No doubt, as am I, you are wore out from the past few days.
So many words and so little clarity.

9. The fact.
That Giffords has consistently responded to commands and questions with expected actions says that she is comprehending well. At issue would be what happened when she opened her eyes, if they moved toward the Representatives, not only would that be comprehension, but also excellent news on her potential recovery level.

Even if Giffords don't make it fully back, she is one brave, strong, inspirational person.

5. They are beyond awesome indeed!
It brings ME to tears wondering what went through Gabbie's thoughts when she opened her eyes and saw WHO was standing next to her bed...being there for HER.

10. She opened her eyes? YAY!
Unfortunately I've been out of the loop tonight so this is the first I'm hearing about this. I'm overwhelmed by this news. I am soooo happy and teary eyed! What a magical moment this must have been for everyone in the room.
