Raw Story: GOP debate audience cheers Perry’s execution record
This one simply leaves me speechless . . .

GOP debate audience cheers Perry’s execution record

Posted on 09.7.11
By David Edwards

< . . . >
“Your state has executed 234 death row inmates, more than any other governor in modern times,” NBC’s Brian Williams told Perry as the conservative audience broke into cheers and applause. “Have you struggled to sleep at night with the idea that any one of those might have been innocent?”

“No, sir, I’ve never struggled with that at all,” Perry flatly stated. “In the state of Texas, if you come into our state and you kill one of our children, you kill a police officer, you’re involved with another crime and you kill one of our citizens, you will face the ultimate justice in the state of Texas, and that is you will be executed.”

< . . . >

"What do you make of that dynamic that just happened here, the mention of the execution of 234 people drew applause?” Williams asked.

“I think Americans understand justice,” Perry explained. “I think Americans are clearly in the vast majority of cases, supportive of capital punishment. When you have committed heinous crimes against our citizens, and it’s a state-by-state issue, but in the state of Texas, our citizens have made that decision, and they made it clear, and they don’t want you to commit those crimes against our citizens, and if you do, you will face the ultimate justice.”

6. That is THE question that all those who think we must
play nice and compromise must answer.

2. Robin Williams on Texas executions
<begin excerpt>
Two weeks ago, Supreme Court banned the execution of retarded people.
People in Texas are going, "Shit, where's the fun in that?"
'Cause they were zapping retarded people every other week.
It was like, "Go sit on Santa's lap, Timmy."
And I know the definition of "retarded" in Texas is pretty wide.
It's crazy!
Even a Taliban is going: "You are crazy mother fuckers!"
There was a guy with one leg. They wouldn't gonna give him a wooden leg.
He's gonna be dead man hopping.
There's a moment of compassion. Before the lethal injection,
they do an alcohol swab. Which is so nice!
What the fuck are you doing?
We don't want you to get that last second infection!
It's all safe now.

5. Any Governor . . .
. . . who can honestly say he has "never struggled at all" with the possibility that innocent persons might have been executed on his watch is a God-damned sociopath! This is especially so in Texas, the state that has had more inmates exonerated by DNA evidence than any other state in the Union. And as far as I'm concerned, anybody who would cheer at his response is just as sociopathic!

9. I have no problem with capital punishment.
I don't feel the need to cheer about it like a teenybopper over a pop star though. To me it's merely justice served and closure for the victim's family. It's unseemly to be that happy about death.

12. That's just it ...
... I am 100% opposed to capital punishment for a variety of reasons, but whether you support it or oppose it, cheering it is simply barbaric. And the question Romney was asked wasn't about his support for the death penalty, but about whether he himself had ever struggled with the question of possible innocence of any of those executed on his watch. (The implied, but thoroughly obvious, context for this question was the wrongful execution of Cameron Todd Willingham.) And for Perry to say he's "never struggled at all" with the question of innocence? Anyone who could say such a thing is an effing psychopath!

13. Didn't Perry dsband a commission that was investigating whether innocent
people had been executed, before they could issue a report?

I guess that's the kind of "limited government" we'd get under a "President Perry"!

16. Hey Perry - If that death penalty thing is so effective in deterring people from killing folks in
Texas, then why the hell did you have 234 people on death row?

I mean . . . if it was so friggin' effective, don't you think you would have had fewer cases?
