For the unemployed: what must Obama say tonight to gain your excitement?
To get you excited about your prospects for employment?

6. Wouldn't that be wild? everybody making under $100,000 per year gets a check for $50K
If you get between 100-200,000 you get a check for $35K
200-300,000 you get a check for $20K
300-400,000 check for $10K
400-500,000 check for $5K

More than $500,000 you get a Gold Star.

8. Oh, but that's "socialism!"
Unless it's $50 billion for Wall Street/banker bailout.

Then it's okay!

3. I don't know that I'll be either excited or not based on what he says.
It all depends on what can get through Congress.

10. And it's safe to assume that they're not going to give him the votes
for what he (or we) wants. That's why he has to sweeten the pot to just get SOME improvement/relief. Doesn't that just suck? :(

12. It's like government, run with the constitutionally mandated approval of spoiled six year olds.
Nobody gets a job unless I get unlimited candy for a year and a later bedtime.

15. But he will run on what he proposes tonight, so he should propose
a really solid plan that appeals to us as well as to Republicans if he wants to be re-elected. Otherwise, we will end up with a looney-tunes Republican because some people will vote for "change," any old "change."

4. Report to work tomorrow.
That's all people want/need to hear. They are hurting NOW. :(

I wish him the best! And recent reports indicate the Republicans might be more agreeable this time around.

Regardless of what he says or what he proposes, he needs their votes to get it implemented. He's in a tough, tough spot.

5. A one trillion dollar, WPA style jobs creation program
That would get me excited.

Instead, what we're going to be given is very tepid soup. A 300 billion dollar stimulus program, where over half is taken up by payroll tax cuts(tax cuts are the least effective form of stimulus) and an extension of unemployment insurance(don't get me wrong, the unemployed need that extension, but it isn't going to create jobs).

That leaves roughly 130 billion dollars, at most, for job creation, and it won't be near that much that is actually applied to job creation. Some of it will be given to the states, some will go towards more job killing free trade.

The president should have gone big, outrageously big, and then negotiated back to something that be passed through Congress. Instead, as usual, Obama is starting with an old school GOP proposal and it will be whittled down to relatively nothing.

21. Maybe if you are a construction worker.
Would you actually get hired by a construction company? Personally if I was unemployed I don't think a WPA program would do much for me.

I apologize and I'm sorry for what I've done.

But I'm not unemployed. Just my partner.
