Chris Mathews was talking as STUPID as O'REALLY STUPID tonight by saying Obama & Buffett are
being "phony" to talk about the UBER-RICH needing to pay higher tax rates; it is NOT "MICKEY MOUSE" to talk about it! And he is WRONG to claim our Income Tax Rates are progressive. When an upper middle class family making a little more than $300,000/yr. is paying the same 35% rate as some1 making making MULTIPLE MILLIONS & EVEN BILLIONS of $/yr., the system is "progressive" in name only.

And when O'REALLY STUPID tries to say that Capital Gains & Earned Income are not both "INCOME" TAXES & as different as "apples & oranges," it is only because bushCO made it so. INCOME IS INCOME, GOD DAMN IT; NO MATTER WHERE IT COMES FROM! And it ain't fair that those who make their HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS, EVEN BILLIONS, of INCOME $ on stock options & pay only 25%, or even 15% if they hold that stock for more than 1 year, while AGAIN, that upper middle class family making a little more than $300,000/yr. is paying the 35% rate.

The LAMEstreamCORPORATEmedia&FIXEDnewsCORP need to be called out on their LIES.

1. $300,000 is not upper middle class
it's puts you well in the top 5%. That's rich. Not super-rich, but rich.

20. yeah bunk
In New York, to be in the top 5%, you only need to make $209,000.

So $300,000 gets you in that elite group by $91,000.

In California, 95% of the population makes less that $216,000. So again, $300,000 puts you in the top 5% by almost $90,000.

21. Depends on area & number in family & number of kids headed for college w/o financial aid.
Edited on Fri Sep-09-11 11:43 AM by supraTruth
But we are quibbling about terms.

The point IS that there is NO progression of taxes AFTER $373,650 CURRENTLY.

although with the inflation calculator, the top rate back then kicked in a $825,000 in today's money.

23. No kidding
The most I ever made was $60K/year as a contract attorney on a project that lasted for 21 months.

Averaging my annual earnings since I left law school 23 years ago (including 4.5 years of unemployment) would probably put me at around $20K/year.

29. When the CONS push for a "FLAT" or "FAIR" tax system, they want U to pay MORE.
We need MORE tax brackets, NOT fewer. & we need MANY MORE tax brackets for the Super&Ultra-Rich.

As an EXAMPLE:

2. More people agree with Obama, I will bet. The reason people
get in nots is simple: People fear they are being screwed
while the rich get away with paying little to nothing.

Lawrence O'Donnell has explained more than once on Last Word,
that when he worked on the HILL he actually worked on Tax Policy
and the tax policy is unfair.

Republicans do not like anything said about them that makes
them look as if they favor the rich. Yet, the Upper Incomers
are their only concern.

3. They want to tax labor, but not capital.
As far as tax brackets, a good example is, why should LeBron James dentist be in the same tax bracket as LeBron James?

9. Yes, in some areas such as some areas in CA & N.Y. & the reason I say so is that a family of 4 or 5
with children beginning college get no financial aid for that college.

U may call them rich; but the point I am making is that there is NO LONGER a PROGRESSIVE tax structure for those making more than $300something thousand/yr. & THAT NEEDS TO CHANGE.

20K a year in a combined household and you want to say 300K isn't rich? Those are the people that need to start paying their fair share.

24. They pay 33% now & I think that a fair Income Tax for them; HOWEVER I ALSO believe they should pay
Payroll Taxes that support Social Security ALL the way up to EVERY penny they make, whereas they currently only pay it on their 1st $110,00.

But there DEFINITELY NEEDS TO BE MORE INCOME TAX RATES ALL THE WAY UP FOR THOSE MAKING BILLIONS.

Edited on Fri Sep-09-11 09:02 PM by provis99
I don't give a damn if $300,000 per year whiny rich assholes think they're poor or only "upper middle class". Middle class kids in Mississippi don't generally even think about going to college.
And if they think their rich neighborhood is too expensive to live in, they can fucking move. Jesus H Christ!

so you get the world's smallest violin.:nopity:

30. I wouldN'T. I doN'T think ANY1 making that small amt. should pay ANY Income Taxes; they are ALREADY
PAYING TOO MUCH in Payroll Taxes.

& I doN'T know why they would stay in Mississippi either.

BTW - that kind of income qualifies for LOTS of help for college, & loans will make up the rest if a student REALLY knows what they want to do for the REST OF THEIR WORKING LIFE (THAT is the DIFFICULT part); otherwise it is not worth racking up the debt.

it's not comparable to multi-millionaires, let alone billionaires.

Millionaires and Billionaires really should be

15. This is an EXAMPLE of a Tax Structure that I think should be discussed in CONgress whether they want
to or not:

http://supratruth.newsvine.com/_news/2011/01/17/5864039-a-proposal-for-real-tax-reform

Certainly, MSNBC & the rest of the LAMEstreamCORPORATEmedia & CurrentTV should be discussing it.

25. We need MORE tax brackets; not fewer. Remember when people USED to say they didN'T really care
if they got a raise because it would put them in a higher tax bracket. With higher tax brackets for those making MILLIONS & BILLIONS, maybe they would quit demanding such high pay (which ALSO robs INVESTORS including pension & retirement funds).

22. Quibbling over terms avoids the FACT that there is NO progression of Tax Rates over $373,650
CURRENTLY.

What those are NOW paying below that is just fine; what is wrong is that those making MILLIONS & EVEN BILLIONS as those paying $400,000 is just WRONG. The progressiveness USED to go ALL the way up to 91% during the LAST GOOD REPUBLICAN'S TERM (Eisenhower).

I say take it up to AT LEAST 49% for BILLIONAIRES like the hedge fund manager who made $4.4BILLION in 2009.
