Poll Shows Democrat Trailing in New York Race
David Weprin, the New York state assemblymember vying to replace ex-congressman Anthony Weiner, may be trailing his Republican opponent Bob Turner by six points in a new poll, but the Democrat’s vote for marriage equality does not appear to be a significant factor.

According to the Siena College Research Institute poll released Friday, Turner leads Weprin by 50% to 44% among likely voters in the 9th Congressional district covering Brooklyn and Queens. Last month, Weprin led Turner by 48% to 42% in the heavily Democratic district where voters will head to the polls this Tuesday for the special election.

Turner, a retired cable television executive who challenged Weiner last year, appears to have gained ground by linking Weprin to economic woes and the leadership of President Barack Obama. The national parties have begun to show elevated interest in the tightening race, which some analysts view as a bellwether contest with the potential for a Republican upset not unlike Scott Brown's victory over Martha Coakley for a Massachusetts senate seat last year. Weiner abruptly resigned in June following a scandal involving racy photos on Twitter.

While some Orthodox Jewish leaders in the district have criticized Weprin, himself an Orthodox Jew, for his vote in support of the new marriage equality law, and the National Organization for Marriage announced it would spend $75,000 to help defeat Weprin over his support, most voters appear to be concerned about issues, according to the new poll.

1. It seems a little early to give this poll any validity.
Besides, it's awfully close to the margin of error. Not to mention, that district could go the way of the dodo, with the upcoming redistricting.

2. I think the poll numbers are telling.
People are voicing what they are concerned about & people running should pay attention to what is being said.

3. I hope those of you who called for Weiner's head on a platter are satisfied.

There seems to be no such thing as a safe Dem seat anywhere at this point. :scared:

36. Oh, my gosh. Did you just say that?
Kidding. Seriously, though, I know what you mean. But, let's face it. The fact that we like and may agree with him on most things does not mean that his behavior should be excused. It's too bad things turned out this way. Meanwhile, let's hope for the best in the coming election.

6. Especially if you nominate a terrible candidate! The NY Dems are at fault
in this one.

11. It really shouldn't matter that much.
Much of the 9th CD is in Brooklyn. Not even Rudy Giuliani (R-9/11) could carry Brooklyn.

12. Yes, but the Dem is not even liberal enough for many of the voters
and being an Orthodox Jewish candidate in Brooklyn is not the same as being, like Weiner, a largely secular Jewish candidate. It was very unwise to nominate him.

33. You have that backwards.
The district itself is not particularly liberal, which is why the Republican is viable here.

The attacks of the vapors and laughable pearl-clutching during that episode was the single most nauseating thing I have seen at DU in the six-plus years I have been here. And that includes the '08 primary wars. :puke:

14. Why would we be satisfied?
The sleazeball resigned. Now, as the argument went, the voters in his district can decide. I find no satisfaction in it changing parties, but I'm not blame - Weiner is.

16. I see you have a union avatar
Weiner may indeed be a sleazeball, but at least he supported things like the EFCA. Turner may be completely above reproach (or, for all we know, may have a cache of pictures of himself with various farm animals on his laptop) -- but he'll be another vote for the union busters.

10. Everyone in that district needs to get out there and get people to
the polls. These stupid surveys can always be wrong, and don't let it get you down. Energizing the community to do what is right is necessary. Give rides, offer to get people there to vote. There isn't much time left. I wish I could be up there shaking the trees.

21. Massive Anti-Obama Efforts In The Jewish/Likudnik Community...
I've gotten a rash of emails from Jewish friends claiming that President Obama is in favor of recognizing Palestinian statehood, the "he's a muslim and hates Jews" and that he's never visted Israel. My bets are there's a lot of whispering going on within the Orthodox communities that may be hurting Werpin. Hopefully that poll is an outlier...

Wait for the election and let the voters decide if they want a Representative who tweets his erect penis.
