Asked if the mood was appropriate, Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup, a Republican, didn’t hesitate...
'“This is a chance to exalt going forward,” University President Robert Shelton told POLITICO after the event. “Maybe you had to be in the environment. You had to feel the energy, the compassion that was there. And people were applauding that compassion, that sense of healing.”

“I think it gives people a chance to collectively grieve. To know that we’re strong, that we’ll come out of this. This was not billed as a wake. It was billed as a way to bring everyone together. The families are extraordinarily pleased by it. And maybe they’re the ultimate judges of what we’ve done here.”

Asked if the mood was appropriate, Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup, a Republican, didn’t hesitate: “Oh yes. Yes! If there was one thing that was appropriate, it was cheering. I’ve been in the hospital, and the people that are healing, they want to hear people cheer.'

It sounds like the speech was well-received locally.

4. I thought the tone was a little weird at first too.
I decided it was because it was the college.

6. It was advertised as a rally, a "UNITY RALLY" per U of A website.
It was called "Together We Thrive: Tucson and America"
The University provided T shirts saying that.

It wasn't just students cheering. The families of those who lost loved ones often joined in, adults of all types joined in the cheers and the tears.

I didn't care either way if they cheered. How else can an audience speak, show they agree, say thanks, whatever.

But a Unity Rally...
Not sure why media hasn't picked up on that part
