Michelle Obama at the Jobs Speech
I've heard several commentators mention Michelle looking sullen/sad/mad at the speech. I didn't see her, but googled up a very short video. She was standing and clapping, but she had a really bad look on her face, and while she was clapping, she was shaking her head "no." It was quite disturbing, actually. So apparently there's speculation that she & the President are on the outs, and thats why she went to Spain instead of spending his birthday with him.

Okay, that's just gossip, and who knows ... maybe she just didn't feel well. But I'm curious if any of you saw this, and what your thoughts are, if any.

4. She may have been talking to someone next to her. I think her
face matched her husband's no non-sense tone and look when he delivered his speech. AND they were in the lion's den so to speak... There were a lot of politicians in that room who are not acting as political opponents... these politicians rhetoric are making her family less safe; they speak badly of her and her children. I would have a bad look on my face looking at those old, white men whose only goal is to derail her husband at the expense of the country and her own family. I wouldn't look all that happy either being in that room with those assholes either.

5. I Don't Think So...
I mean, how can any of us know, but didn't she go to Spain with her daughters last year or so with her close friend? If I remember, her friend's father had died, and Michelle couldn't be with her during that time because of the campaign or the inauguration.

I saw several pictures of her smiling before the speech, maybe she was frowning at the reaction of the Republicans. I certainly was.

I haven't heard any comments about it. My first impression last night, based on nothing but her demeanor, was that something was terribly wrong and perhaps there have been more threats on his life or maybe on his family.

As I said, based on nothing perhaps beyond my own fears - she did look sullenly out of character and I've never seen that look on her before. Last time I saw photos of her in public was when she was in South Africa with Nelson Mandela; she seemed herself then.

Wat

On edit: as mentioned by several posters above, I would much rather be chatting with President Mandela than in the room with all those Repubs.

13. I saw that instance and I think she was looking in disgust at the Republicans
for sitting on their thumbs when Obama was getting a standing ovation from everyone else.

Obama acknowledged her presence by pointing out to Biden that their wives were there.

I hope their marriage makes it through this mess in Washington. So much stress on all of them.

Edited on Fri Sep-09-11 08:22 PM by FrenchieCat
where people will depict her husband as weak for not saying what they think he should have said when they think he should have said it. Probably read a letter or two showing utter disrespect for this President, after he financial saved this country from total darkness and killed that asshole Bin laden....and then he's called weak and other names from folks of which half aren't even smarter than her daughters.

The look on her face was probably a "kiss my ass you triffling MF ingrates! You didn't elect a fucking janitor to clean up your mess while you sit there throwing rocks at him!"...or something like that.

36. She looks like she is about to cry....
Of course we don't know what she looked like immediately after that, because it stops at that second.

My impression... She looks sad because she knows how hard Barack is working to help the country and how much he put into that speech while the repukes have no intention of cooperating with him. She is thinking that he is too good to be pleading for their help and they don't deserve the respect he has shown them.

33. I would hate to speculate as to why
But her reaction was notable and it was curious. It is odd that she didn't keep her feelings (whatever they may be) in check but she's human. She may have just dropped the first lady veil for a moment. If I had to guess, I would say that it's the entire political atmosphere moreso than anything specific to the President or their relationship.

48. Maybe she is just sick and tired of the disrespect her husband constantly receives and thought
it was BS that he had to move the date of his speech, and that he even had to give a speech to a joint session of Congress to tell them to get to work.

I agree, she definitely did not seem happy.
